Chapter 11 - Locker 23)

The wedding did not continue that afternoon.
Sebastian expected Elisa to be devastated.
Instead, she removed her veil, sat beside Leo in the library, and ordered pizza.
Two hundred guests went home carrying a story none of them would ever forget.
Leo ate three slices.
Sebastian ate nothing.
At 7:30 p.m., Martin Vale arrived at the mansion with an attorney.
He looked older in person.
Smaller.
A man who had spent nine years running from a life that had never stopped following him.
Sebastian placed the Blackwater receipt on the table.
"Locker twenty-three."
Martin stared at it.
"Anna found that?"
"It was in the vase."
Martin sat down.
Elisa watched him.
"What is inside?"
Martin rubbed his face.
"The original ledger."
Sebastian frowned.
"Preston said Anna never found it."
"She didn't."
"Then why was the receipt hidden with her documents?"
"Because she found me."
Martin looked toward Leo.
The boy sat beside Elisa.
Martin seemed uncomfortable.
Sebastian noticed.
"Talk."
Martin took a breath.
"Anna contacted me eight months before she died. I was living in Maine. I thought nobody knew."
"How?"
"She followed a payment Preston made through one of the shell companies."
"And?"
"She asked for the ledger."
"You refused."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because the ledger doesn't only show Preston and Lucinda."
Sebastian leaned forward.
"Who else?"
Martin looked toward Leo again.
Sebastian's voice hardened.
"Stop looking at my son and answer me."
Martin swallowed.
"Anna."
Leo froze.
Elisa immediately put a hand on his shoulder.
Sebastian stood.
"What are you saying?"
Martin raised both hands.
"Not what you think."
"Then explain quickly."
"One transaction carries Anna's authorization."
Sebastian laughed bitterly.
"Forged."
"No."
The room became silent.
Martin continued.
"Anna transferred two million dollars from one of Matteo's private accounts."
"To where?"
"A medical research foundation in Zurich."
Sebastian stared.
Martin added, "She told me Matteo approved it verbally."
"Why wasn't it documented?"
"Because the money had originally been in one of the accounts we used."
Sebastian understood slowly.
Anna had found stolen family money.
Instead of returning one portion immediately, she had redirected it.
"For treatment?"
Martin nodded.
Leo whispered, "For Mom?"
"No," Martin said.
Everyone looked at him.
"The foundation funded an experimental pediatric cancer program."
Leo's eyes widened.
Martin continued.
"Anna knew she probably couldn't be saved. She wanted the money to help children."
Sebastian sat back down.
"Why hide that?"
"Because technically, it was unauthorized."
Elisa said, "Preston could make it look like Anna was part of the theft."
"Exactly."
Martin looked at Sebastian.
"That was his insurance. If Anna exposed him, he would expose the transaction and say she had been using the accounts too."
Sebastian thought about Anna's letter.
I hid it because you trusted them.
She had carried that secret while dying.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Martin shook his head.
"I can't answer that."
Leo could.
"Because Dad would have given the money back."
Sebastian looked at him.
Leo continued quietly.
"And Mom wanted the kids to have it."
Sebastian closed his eyes.
He would have returned the money.
Immediately.
Legally.
Correctly.
Anna had known him.
Maybe too well.
Elisa asked Martin, "What else is in the ledger?"
"Everything."
"Names?"
"Accounts. Dates. Transfers. Forged authorizations. Payments to me. Payments to shell companies. Preston's notes."
"Then why keep it?"
"Protection."
Sebastian said, "Take us to it."
Blackwater Point was three hours away.
They arrived after midnight.
Locker 23 sat inside a marine storage building.
Martin opened it.
Inside was a waterproof case.
He placed it on a workbench.
Sebastian opened the lid.
A thick black ledger rested inside.
Beneath it were several envelopes.
One was addressed to Anna.
It had never been opened.
Sebastian recognized Matteo's handwriting.
He looked at Martin.
"Where did you get this?"
"Your father gave it to me the week before his stroke."
Sebastian's pulse quickened.
"Why?"
"He knew I was involved."
"Why trust you?"
"He didn't."
Martin looked ashamed.
"He told me that if I still had any decency, I'd give it to Anna."
Sebastian opened the letter.
Anna,
If I fail to clean this up, do not let Sebastian turn his anger into guilt.
He trusts family because I taught him to.
That is my failure, not his.
Protect Leo's future.
Protect Sebastian from becoming a man who thinks love is a weakness.
And if Helena's children ever choose truth, let the law decide what forgiveness cannot.
Matteo.
Sebastian folded the letter carefully.
May you like
Leo leaned against him.
For the first time in five years, Sebastian allowed himself to cry in front of his son.
