The ballroom became a field of broken glass, wine, cake, flowers, and silence.
Preston lay among the collapsed wine display.
Lucinda sat beside the overturned dessert cart.
Leo was behind Sebastian.
Elisa stood beside him.
Sebastian held the envelope.
Thomas's security officers closed the ballroom doors.
Guests murmured.
Sebastian looked at Preston.
"Nobody leaves."
Preston struggled to stand.
"You can't hold people here."
Thomas answered.
"We're not holding guests."
He looked toward two plainclothes investigators near the back wall.
"We're preserving a scene."
Preston's confidence finally cracked.
Sebastian broke the wax seal.
Inside were three documents.
The first was the original revised Caradonna Family Trust schedule.
Signed by Matteo Caradonna.
Witnessed.
Notarized.
Dated eleven days before his stroke.
It granted a protected eighteen-percent voting interest to Leo.
It also contained a misconduct clause.
Any beneficiary proven to have stolen from the trust automatically forfeited voting rights pending judicial review.
Preston stared at the document.
"No."
Sebastian unfolded the second paper.
A handwritten note from Anna.
Sebastian,
If this reaches you, then the truth survived longer than I did.
The transfer records are real.
The signatures are not.
Do not let Preston tell you Matteo changed his mind.
He didn't.
Do not let Lucinda tell you silence made her innocent.
It didn't.
And don't let yourself believe you failed me.
You didn't.

Sebastian stopped reading.
For several seconds, the ballroom disappeared.
There was only Anna's handwriting.
Leo touched his arm.
"Dad?"
Sebastian lowered the page.
"I'm okay."
The third document was smaller.
A receipt.
Blackwater Marine Services.
Annual storage fee.
Private locker 23.
Paid by Martin Vale.
Sebastian looked toward Lucinda.
Her expression changed.
"You didn't know about this."
She shook her head.
Preston suddenly moved.
He lunged toward Sebastian.
Security officers intercepted him.
He fought.
"That document is fake."
Sebastian watched calmly.
Preston shouted toward the guests.
"He's staging this. Sebastian has wanted us out of the company for years."
A man near the back spoke.
"Then why did you slap an eleven-year-old over an envelope?"
Preston looked toward Leo.
The boy's cheek still carried the red outline of his hand.
Guests began whispering.
Lucinda slowly stood.
Preston saw her.
"Say something."
She did not.
"Lucinda."
She looked at her brother.
"I went to Blackwater."
Preston's face went white.
"What?"
"I found Martin."
"Shut up."
"I gave Sebastian the cedar box."
Preston surged against security.
"You stupid..."
Lucinda stepped back.
For years, fear had kept her loyal.
Now everyone saw it.
Sebastian did too.
Lucinda reached into her purse.
She removed her phone.
"I have something else."
Preston stopped struggling.
"No."
Lucinda looked directly at Sebastian.
"I recorded him last night."
She pressed play.
Preston's voice filled the ballroom.
If Sebastian finds the trust schedule, the Hale voting rights are finished.
Lucinda's voice answered.
Then tell the truth.
Preston laughed.
About Matteo? About the accounts? About Vale? You confess and I'll make sure every document says it was your idea.
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Lucinda lowered the phone.
Preston stared at her.
"You betrayed me."
Lucinda's voice shook.
"No."
She looked around the destroyed ballroom.
"I stopped helping you betray everyone else."
Two investigators approached Preston.
One showed identification.
"We need to speak with you."
Preston looked toward Sebastian.
"You think you've won?"
Sebastian said nothing.
Preston smiled.
"Ask Martin what's in locker twenty-three."
Then he laughed.
Sebastian's expression changed.
Preston continued.
"Anna never found the real ledger."
Thomas stepped closer.
"What is in the locker?"
