Chapter 7: A Late Apology
That night, Ethan called Caroline.
The conversation did not last long. He told Caroline that she and Sophie would temporarily return to her old apartment while he worked with the family lawyer.
Caroline cried, blamed him, and said he was being cruel. But this time, he did not waver.
He finally understood that the fake peace inside his home had been bought with Liam’s silence.
A few days later, Caroline came to school to apologize to Liam.
Not because she had suddenly become kind overnight. But because the school had recorded the incident. Because Ethan had set clear boundaries. And because Anna’s lawyer had reminded Caroline that any behavior that hurt Liam could affect whether she was allowed to live with him.
Caroline stood in front of Liam, her usual arrogance gone.
She looked at the lunchbox in his hands.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Liam said nothing.
Caroline swallowed hard.
“I was wrong to throw it away. I… I was jealous of someone who wasn’t even here anymore. And I took it out on you.”
Liam looked at her.
He had once thought that if Caroline ever bowed her head to him, he would feel happy. But now, he did not feel happy. He only felt a little lighter.
“You don’t have to love my mother,” Liam said. “But you are not allowed to make me forget her.”
Caroline lowered her head.
“Okay.”
After that day, Liam no longer called Caroline “Mom.” Ethan did not force him to.
