Chapter 6: Locker Number 214

That afternoon, Ethan did not make Liam return to class right away. He took his son to Lakeview Bank, where the small brass key could open locker number 214.

Anna’s former lawyer was there as well. She had been one of Anna’s closest friends.

When the locker was opened, inside were a folder of documents, a photo album, a small handkerchief, and a private letter for Ethan.

Ethan turned through the documents with shaking hands.

Anna had prepared everything in advance.

She had left an education fund for Liam, enough to support him through college. The money was protected by clear conditions: it could only be used for Liam, and no one had the right to transfer or use it without both Ethan and the lawyer’s approval.

Anna had also left a small amount of money for a charity project she had not been able to complete.

The name of the project was:

“Liam’s Lunchbox.”

Its goal was simple: to help students who did not have enough food for lunch.

Ethan stared at those words for a long time.

He remembered once when Anna had spoken about this dream. It was a winter night, and Liam had already fallen asleep. Anna had been sitting at the kitchen table, writing something in an old notebook.

“I want to start a small fund one day,” she had said. “It doesn’t have to be big. Just enough to help a few children at Liam’s school have a proper lunch.”

Back then, Ethan had been answering work emails. He had only replied carelessly, “Sure. We’ll do it when we have time.”

But time was something they had once believed they had plenty of.

Only after losing Anna did Ethan understand that some promises should never be left for tomorrow.

That evening, Ethan did not take Liam home right away. He took him to a small restaurant Anna used to love.

The two of them sat beside the window.

Liam asked quietly, “What are you going to do about Caroline?”

Ethan was silent for a moment before answering.

“I won’t let anyone continue living with you if you are not safe and respected.”

Liam lowered his head.

“I don’t want you to be sad.”

May you like

Ethan placed his hand over his son’s.

“Liam, protecting you does not make me sad. Not protecting you is what I can never forgive myself for.”
