Chapter 8 - The House Without Her

The following weeks were filled with investigations, statements and locked accounts.

The forensic team discovered that Adrian had moved more than nine million dollars through Northstar and two related companies. The planned second transfer had not been completed.

Most of the missing money was located before it could be moved beyond recovery.

Adrian’s access to Whitmore Hotels was terminated immediately. The board opened an independent investigation, and Richard voluntarily stepped away from financial decisions until the review was complete.

He refused to hide what had happened.

At an emergency board meeting, he told the directors the truth.

“I allowed personal trust to replace proper oversight. That failure is mine. The theft is not.”

The company issued a controlled public statement concerning financial misconduct by a former adviser. Richard did not mention the affair. He did not need revenge through humiliation.

He wanted accountability.

Celeste hired her own attorney and initially denied involvement. When investigators presented the recording, forged emails and financial messages recovered from Adrian’s laptop, her position changed.

She claimed she had been manipulated.

Adrian claimed the same.

Neither explanation matched the evidence.

The divorce moved quickly because the prenuptial agreement included strict provisions concerning fraud and concealed financial misconduct.

Celeste left the marriage with her personal belongings, a limited amount of money that had legally belonged to her before the wedding and nothing from the Whitmore family trust.

Richard did not celebrate.

He had lost a marriage, a friendship and the illusion that his judgment could never be manipulated.

For several days, he barely left the study.

Eleanor postponed her return to Chicago.

One evening, she found him sitting in the dark drawing room.

The empty space where her mother’s piano had once stood seemed larger than before.

Richard held one of the forged emails.

“I believed this.”

“You did.”

“I thought you wanted me out of your life.”

“I thought you had stopped caring.”

“I called you.”

“Celeste blocked your number on my old phone. I found out after I replaced it.”

Richard lowered his head.

“I should have come to Chicago.”

“I could have come here sooner.”

“I was the parent.”

“You were also grieving.”

“That is not an excuse.”

“No. But it is part of the truth.”

He looked at her.

“Can you forgive me?”

Eleanor sat beside him.

“Not all at once.”

Richard nodded.

“That is fair.”

“But I’m willing to try.”

The next morning, they went together to the storage building behind the estate.

Beneath protective sheets and sealed boxes, they found Margaret’s piano.

Several keys were damaged. Dust covered the wood.

Richard placed his hand on it.

“Your mother hated this piano.”

Eleanor smiled.

“She said she loved it.”

“She loved making everyone listen to her play it.”

For the first time since the night of the confrontation, they both laughed.

They arranged to have it restored.
