Chapter 7 - The Price of Silence

Celeste returned to the study wearing a gray coat over her blue dress.
A security officer waited in the hall.
She saw the emails on the desk and stopped.
Richard rose.
“You created these?”
Celeste looked at Eleanor.
“She would have said those things eventually.”
“That is not an answer.”
“You were obsessed with repairing your relationship with her. Every time she called, every time she visited, I became invisible.”
“So you made me believe she hated me.”
“I made space for our marriage.”
“You stole two years from us.”
Celeste’s composure disappeared.
“I spent six years trying to become part of this family, and she never allowed it.”
Eleanor stood.
“You removed my mother’s photographs. You intercepted my messages. You lied to both of us.”
“You looked at me like I was temporary.”
“You made yourself temporary.”
Celeste turned toward Richard.
“Adrian controlled the money. I can prove it.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“You participated in conversations about the transfers.”
“I knew about some of them, not all.”
“You discussed leaving the country.”
“Because Adrian threatened me.”
A voice came from the hallway.
“She is lying.”
Adrian stood between two security officers. He had apparently returned because Daniel had requested his company laptop before he left the property.
Adrian looked at Richard.
“Celeste planned everything. She identified which accounts you rarely reviewed. She persuaded you to sign revised trust documents.”
Celeste laughed.
“And you created Northstar.”
“You asked me to.”
“You were stealing from Richard long before I met him.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
Richard watched them expose each other without mercy.
Their partnership had survived because it was built on shared greed. The moment consequences appeared, loyalty vanished.
Adrian turned to Richard.
“I will return the money I controlled. I will cooperate. I will tell you where every account is located.”
“In exchange for what?” Daniel asked.
“Richard does not involve the authorities.”
Richard’s eyes hardened.
“You believe this is a negotiation?”
“I can make recovery easier.”
“You entered my home, betrayed my trust, used my company and helped forge my signature.”
“I made terrible decisions.”
“You made repeated decisions.”
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
“She has the recording. If it becomes public, the company’s reputation will suffer. Investors will panic. The foundation could lose donors.”
It was a final attempt to use Richard’s legacy against him.
Eleanor picked up her phone.
“You are asking us to protect the company by protecting the people who stole from it.”
Adrian said nothing.
Richard walked to the study door and opened it.
“Take him out.”
Adrian’s voice rose.
“Richard, think carefully.”
“I trusted you for fifteen years. I have done enough careless thinking.”
Security led Adrian away.
Celeste remained near the desk.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
Richard looked at the woman who had shared his home and carried his name.
“To whatever life you were planning to begin with my money.”
“I have no access to the accounts.”
“That is now a matter for the attorneys.”
“You promised to take care of me.”
“I promised that to the woman I believed I married.”
Celeste looked at Eleanor with open hatred.
“You have finally gotten what you wanted.”
Eleanor shook her head.
May you like
“I wanted my father to be loved. None of this is what I wanted.”
Celeste was escorted from the mansion without another word.
