Chapter 11 - The Red Car)

Ruby's memory had never been considered evidence because no one knew there was a memory to examine.

She had been two years old.

The official story stated that Lucia left the mansion alone at 9:40 a.m. in her black SUV.

Security footage from that morning had been corrupted.

Adrian blamed a server failure.

Domenico believed him.

Now Ruby remembered something different.

Detective Shaw arranged for a child interview specialist.

Domenico watched from behind one way glass.

Ruby sat at a small table with crayons.

No one pressured her.

No one asked leading questions.

The specialist simply invited her to describe the day Mommy went away.

Ruby remembered rain.

Orange perfume.

Her pink blanket.

She remembered Lucia arguing with Valentina in the garage.

She remembered Marcus.

She remembered being lifted into Rosa's arms.

Then she remembered Lucia entering a red car with Valentina.

"Was Mommy happy?"

Ruby shook her head.

"Was Mommy hurt?"

"No."

"Did Mommy want to go?"

Ruby thought for a long time.

"She said, 'I can drive myself.'"

Domenico closed his eyes.

The specialist continued gently.

"What happened then?"

"Miss Valentina said they had to talk."

"Did you see Mommy after that?"

Ruby shook her head.

The interview ended without dramatic conclusions.

But it gave Shaw a direction.

Vehicle records showed Valentina had owned a red Mercedes three years earlier.

She sold it eleven days after Lucia died.

Police found the buyer.

The car still existed.

Forensic investigators examined it.

Inside a seam beneath the rear passenger seat, they found a strand of hair.

Testing confirmed it belonged to Lucia.

Domenico received the call at 2:11 a.m.

He was sitting beside Ruby's bed.

"Lucia was in Valentina's car," Shaw said.

Domenico looked at his sleeping daughter.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the timeline is wrong."

Further evidence arrived quickly.

Traffic cameras from a private toll road had archived more data than investigators originally requested.

At 10:14 a.m. on the morning Lucia died, Valentina's red Mercedes traveled north.

Lucia's black SUV did not.

At 11:02, both vehicles appeared on a gas station camera near the mountain road.

Marcus drove Lucia's SUV.

Valentina drove the Mercedes.

Lucia was visible in the passenger seat.

At 11:23, cameras caught both vehicles turning toward an isolated overlook.

At 12:06, only Valentina's Mercedes came back.

At 12:44, Lucia's SUV was discovered in the ravine.

The missing forty three minutes became the center of the murder investigation.

Marcus broke first.

His attorney negotiated an interview.

Marcus claimed they never intended to kill Lucia.

They intended to frighten her.

Take the files.

Force her to remain silent.

According to Marcus, Adrian had discovered Lucia copying financial records.

The theft involved twenty eight million dollars diverted over six years.

Marcus created shell vendors.

Adrian approved invoices.

Valentina helped conceal ownership.

Lucia discovered the pattern.

When she threatened to tell Domenico, they panicked.

Marcus said Lucia agreed to meet Valentina on the morning of her death because Valentina claimed she wanted to turn against the others.

Instead they took Lucia to the overlook.

Marcus brought her SUV separately.

They demanded the vault information.

Lucia refused.

Marcus insisted that no one touched her.

Shaw did not believe him.

"What happened next?"

Marcus looked at his attorney.

Then at the table.

"Adrian changed the plan."

"How?"

"He said she couldn't go home."

"What did that mean?"

Marcus remained silent.

Shaw waited.

Finally he whispered, "He cut the brake line."

Domenico was not allowed inside the interrogation room.

He watched through the glass.

Marcus continued.

"I told him it was too far."

"Did you stop him?"

"No."

"Did Valentina?"

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"Valentina told him to make it look natural."

Domenico's vision blurred.

Shaw asked the next question.

"How did Lucia get into her SUV?"

Marcus rubbed his face.

"We told her we were letting her leave."

"And you knew the brakes had been damaged?"

"Yes."

"Did she?"

"No."

"Who gave her the keys?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Valentina."

Domenico turned away from the glass.

He walked into the corridor.

For three years he had imagined Lucia losing control on wet pavement.

He had imagined her frightened and alone.

Now he knew something worse.

She had believed she had escaped.

She had climbed into her car thinking she was finally going home to Ruby.

Valentina had handed her the keys knowing she would never arrive.

Domenico pressed both hands against the wall.

Shaw joined him twenty minutes later.

"We'll verify everything."

"He told you enough."

"His testimony needs corroboration."

"He said Valentina gave her the keys."

"I heard."

Domenico's voice broke.

"She stood at Lucia's funeral."

Shaw said nothing.

"She held my daughter."

Silence.

"She came into my house while I was grieving and told me she understood loneliness."

Domenico looked at her.

"And I believed her."

Shaw's expression softened only slightly.

"That's how people like this survive. They use whatever the victim needs."

Domenico looked through the glass again.

"What happens now?"

"We find Adrian."

Domenico turned.

"He's gone?"

"He escaped transport before charges were finalized."

"How?"

"Someone helped him."

"Valentina?"

"She's in custody."

"Marcus?"

"Also custody."

Domenico understood.

"There is someone else."

Shaw nodded.

"The person Lucia warned you about may not have been Adrian."

Domenico remembered the letter.

Someone inside your office is protecting them.

Maybe Lucia had not meant one person.

Maybe she meant a network.

His phone rang.

Rosa.

Domenico answered.

Her voice was shaking.

"Domenico."

May you like

"What happened?"

"Ruby is gone."
