Chapter 7 - The wife he betrayed twice

After seeing the marriage certificate, Serena turned on Bennett.

“You told me the Nevada marriage had been canceled.”

Bennett remained on the floor.

“It was supposed to be.”

“You said the paperwork had been destroyed.”

“That is not how legal records work,” Adrian said.

Serena looked at him sharply.

“Who are you?”

“Tessa’s attorney.”

Bennett stood and reached for Serena’s arm.

“We need to leave.”

She pulled away.

“Did you steal from her family?”

“No.”

Tessa lifted the forensic report.

“The transfers are documented.”

Serena looked at the figures. Her brother’s company appeared repeatedly.

She had known Bennett was moving money.

She had told herself it came from consulting work. She had accepted the townhouse, the school payments, the jewelry, and the promise of a larger home.

But the report showed amounts far beyond anything Bennett could honestly earn.

“You said the money was yours,” Serena whispered.

“It would have been.”

Those four words silenced the room.

Bennett had never considered the Vale fortune stolen because he believed he deserved it.

One investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Crane, we need you to come with us to answer questions regarding financial fraud, identity misuse, and falsified corporate filings.”

Bennett turned to Tessa.

“You planned this.”

“I protected myself.”

“We can fix it.”

“There is no we.”

His expression softened suddenly.

It was the face he had used when he first approached her at the charity dinner.

“Tessa, think about everything we had.”

She looked at Clara.

“What we had was built around everything you wanted to take.”

“I loved you.”

“You studied me.”

Bennett’s face changed again.

The tenderness vanished.

“You think your family will let you lead after this scandal? They’ll blame you for bringing me inside.”

“My family already voted this morning.”

He stared at her.

Tessa removed a final paper from the folder.

The trust board had appointed her acting chairwoman of Vale Meridian, effective immediately. Every authorization previously given to Bennett had been revoked.

His forged emergency appointment had been formally rejected.

The company had also filed claims against every business involved in the stolen transfers.

Bennett moved toward the bed, but Mara blocked him.

The investigators escorted him out.

As he passed Serena, she refused to look at him.

Owen stood near the doorway, frightened by the adults around him.

Tessa felt no anger toward the child.

He was innocent, just as Clara was innocent.

“Serena,” Tessa said.

Serena stopped.

“Take care of your son. Whatever happens next, do not make him responsible for Bennett’s choices.”

For the first time, shame appeared on Serena’s face.

She took Owen’s hand and left.

Adrian remained behind.

“The authorities may need a formal statement later,” he said. “Not today.”

Tessa nodded.

Mara adjusted Clara’s blanket.

Lydia entered moments later and looked toward the empty space where Bennett had stood.

“Is it finished?”

Tessa looked at her newborn daughter.

“The lie is finished.”

Outside the hospital, Bennett was placed into an official vehicle while cameras gathered at the entrance.

Inside, Tessa fed her daughter and watched the morning sun rise higher over the city.
