Chapter 4 - Everything he promised her
Julia found Serena within forty-eight hours.
She lived in a townhouse purchased through a company Bennett controlled. Her son attended a private school whose fees were paid from an account connected to one of Bennett’s consulting firms.
Photographs showed Bennett entering the townhouse twice a week.
In some pictures, he carried groceries.
In others, Owen ran into his arms.
One image showed Serena kissing Bennett at the door while the child held a drawing that appeared to show three people beneath the words My Family.
Tessa examined every photograph in Julia’s office.
She did not cry until she reached the final image.
Bennett was wearing the blue sweater she had given him for their anniversary.
The picture had been taken on the same night he told Tessa he was traveling to Boston.
“How old is the boy?” she asked.
“Six.”
Tessa and Bennett had met four years earlier.
The child existed before their relationship began.
“This wasn’t an affair that happened because our marriage became difficult,” Tessa said.
“No,” Julia replied. “This appears to be a continuing relationship.”
Julia also discovered that Serena knew about Tessa.
Messages recovered through a court-authorized review of a company device revealed that Bennett had promised Serena a permanent future.
Once I control the trust, we stop hiding.
Another message read:
Tessa will agree to anything after the baby arrives. She is emotionally weak, and her family will avoid a public scandal.
Serena had answered:
Owen deserves the life you promised him. Do not let her daughter change the plan.
The cruelty of the message hurt more than the photographs.
Tessa’s daughter had not yet been born, but Serena already viewed her as an obstacle.
Julia advised Tessa not to confront Bennett.
“There is something larger happening,” she said. “The money supporting Serena is moving through several shell companies. Some of it may have originated from Vale Meridian.”
Tessa felt the room tilt.
Bennett had not only betrayed her marriage.
He might have stolen from her family.
Julia assembled a small team that included a forensic accountant and a retired records specialist. They traced transfers, reviewed archived company files, and compared Tessa’s signatures with electronic authorizations.
The evidence revealed a carefully constructed scheme.
Bennett had used his access to create false consulting contracts. He redirected payments to companies linked to Serena’s brother, then moved the money through property investments and private accounts.
Some transactions carried Tessa’s name.
She had never approved them.
Bennett had copied her digital signature from legitimate documents and attached it to new authorizations.
The total exceeded eight million dollars.
Tessa wanted him arrested immediately.
Julia asked her to wait.
“He believes he is close to gaining something bigger,” she said. “If we act now, we recover part of the money. If we understand the entire plan, we may recover everything.”
That evening, Tessa returned home and found Bennett assembling a crib.
He smiled when she entered.
“I thought our daughter should have something built by her father.”
Tessa watched him tighten a screw with careful hands.
She wondered how many lies a person could carry while appearing completely calm.
Then Bennett looked at her stomach and asked a question that confirmed Julia’s warning.
“Have you considered giving me temporary authority over your trust decisions while you recover from the birth?”
Tessa forced herself to smile.
“We can discuss it.”
