Chapter 13 - the wedding trap)

The morning of the wedding began with rain.
By noon sunlight had broken through the clouds.
St. Augustine Church filled with politicians, executives, society families, journalists invited under the guise of lifestyle coverage, Blackwood employees, Morgan executives, and enough witnesses to make secrecy impossible.
Claire had arranged that deliberately.
Vivian believed she had expanded the guest list because she wanted the wedding to look grand.
In reality, Claire wanted the truth to have an audience.
Reyes placed investigators nearby without entering the church.
They did not yet have enough evidence for every arrest Claire wanted.
That was about to change.
Laura Bennett sat in the third row disguised beneath glasses and a gray coat.
Natalie Pierce waited in a secure room across the street with federal agents.
Mara wore a listening device.
Charles Mercer arrived carrying a sealed evidence package and the expression of a man attending his own sentencing.
David Morgan entered through a side door using a false invitation.
Martin Hale controlled church security.
Every player was present.
Ethan walked into Claire’s dressing room fifteen minutes before the ceremony.
Her bridesmaids had been asked to leave.
He closed the door.
Claire looked at him through the mirror.
“You’re not supposed to see me.”
“I need to know whether you’re going to embarrass me.”
She turned.
“What does that mean?”
“Your little investigation.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“I’m done.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Ethan approached.
“What changed?”
“I realized Dad kept secrets too.”
He watched her carefully.
Claire continued.
“He arranged our meeting.”
Ethan relaxed.
“So you know.”
“Yes.”
“Then you understand.”
“No.”
His expression tightened.
“But I understand enough.”
Claire held out her hand.
“After the ceremony, we can discuss the agreement.”
Ethan smiled.
Victory.
He kissed her.
Claire endured it.
When he turned away, he noticed her bouquet.
For one terrifying second his gaze lingered on it.
The USB was hidden inside.
“You changed the flowers.”
“Roses wilted.”
He accepted the explanation.
Then he touched her veil.
“You look beautiful.”
Claire almost believed he meant it.
Almost.
Then he whispered, “Don’t make me regret trusting you today.”
He left.
Mara entered moments later.
“He bought it.”
Claire nodded.
“You ready?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Claire looked at her.
“Good?”
“People who think they’re ready do stupid things.”
Claire laughed despite herself.
Then the door opened again.
Vivian entered.
Mara left.
Vivian walked around Claire slowly.
“You have caused Ethan quite enough stress.”
Claire said nothing.
“Marriage requires obedience to certain realities.”
Claire met her eyes through the mirror.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning my son has spent his life preparing to lead.”
“And I should follow.”
“You should recognize what you married.”
Claire almost smiled.
“What exactly am I marrying?”
Vivian leaned closer.
“Power.”
Claire stood.
“Then why does he need mine?”
Vivian’s face hardened.
Claire immediately knew she had gone too far.
“Excuse me?”
“My trust.”
Vivian grabbed Claire’s wrist.
The already injured one.
Pain shot up Claire’s arm.
“You listen carefully.”
Claire looked down at Vivian’s hand.
The door remained closed.
The hidden camera was recording.
“After the ceremony, you will sign.”
“No.”
Vivian tightened her grip.
“You have no idea what happens if you refuse.”
“Tell me.”
Vivian smiled.
“Your father refused.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Vivian realized what she had said.
Too late.
Claire whispered, “Is that a threat?”
Vivian released her.
“Take it however you wish.”
Then she tore a section of Claire’s veil.
Not enough to destroy it.
Enough to humiliate.
Claire said nothing.
Vivian walked out.
Mara returned.
“Did we get it?”
Claire touched the microphone hidden in the bouquet.
“Every word.”
The processional began.
Claire walked toward the altar.
Every step felt unreal.
Ethan saw the torn veil.
He knew his mother had done it.
He smiled.
When Claire reached him, he touched the corner of her mouth.
Earlier, while preparing, Claire had accidentally reopened a small cut Ethan had caused during an argument the previous evening when he shoved her against a doorframe.
He wiped the blood with his thumb.
Then looked toward his groomsmen.
“See that? The bitch finally knows who’s in charge.”
A few men laughed nervously.
Claire heard gasps.
The pastor stiffened.
That moment had not been part of her plan.
Neither was what happened next.
Ethan took Claire’s wrist.
“Smile, darling. After this, you’re all mine.”
Claire stared at him.
She had intended to wait until after the vows.
She could not.
Vivian stepped closer, pulled Claire’s torn veil lower, and whispered loudly enough for nearby guests to hear.
“You pathetic gold digger.”
Claire looked at the woman.
Then at Ethan.
Two years of manipulation condensed into one clear second.
She reached into the bouquet.
Removed the USB.
Ethan’s smile vanished.
He lunged.
Claire slapped him.
Hard.
“Don’t touch me.”
Silence.
Everything accelerated.
Claire moved toward the projector.
Ethan shouted.
“Turn that damn thing off.”
Claire plugged in the USB.
“Scared now, are you?”
The screen lit.
Hotel room.
Ethan.
Vivian.
The hidden figure.
The recording played.
The moment Claire signs the papers, we’ll
Black.
The chapel erupted.
Exactly as Claire expected.
What nobody except Mara and Reyes knew was that the screen had gone black intentionally.
Claire had edited the recording.
The full sentence existed.
She had received it at 3:17 that morning from Charles Mercer.
The moment Claire signs the papers, we’ll move the shares, make Ethan disappear, and blame Claire when Morgan collapses.
Martin Hale’s voice.
David Morgan’s plan.
Claire had not played the rest yet.
Because she wanted to see who reacted before hearing it.
Ethan went pale.
Vivian gasped.
David stood near the side aisle.
Martin Hale reached for his radio.
Claire saw all of it.
Then the chapel doors locked.
Hale gave the order.
Fire alarm.
Chaos.
Claire’s phone buzzed.
David’s message.
You exposed the wrong person. Run now.
Claire looked at him across the church.
David realized she knew.
That was when federal investigators entered.
And Claire removed the silver key from her bouquet.
Vivian’s terror became immediate.
The key opened Thomas Morgan’s private deposit box.
A box Vivian believed had been empty for six years.
Claire held it up.
“You recognize it.”
Vivian lunged.
The pastor stepped between them.
Laura Bennett stood.
May you like
Vivian whispered, “No.”
Then every plan began collapsing at once.
