THE RUBY LIE / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - The Missing Minute

Rachel took Emily to the ballroom.

She knew it violated the rules, but after finding her alone with Adrian, rules had become less important than visibility.

The orchestra played beneath the balcony. Guests moved around the polished floor. At the far end, technicians prepared the large projection screen for Victor’s speech.

Emily stayed close to Rachel.

“Are we going home?”

“As soon as I can find Mrs. Bell.”

“Mr. Adrian said Daddy was brave.”

Rachel stopped.

“What else did he say?”

“That Daddy tried to protect people.”

“Which people?”

“He wouldn’t tell me.”

Rachel looked across the ballroom.

Adrian stood beside Victor, but his attention was fixed on them.

Victor followed Adrian’s gaze.

For the briefest moment, uncle and nephew exchanged a look filled with mutual distrust.

The lights dimmed.

Victor stepped onto the stage.

“Friends, partners, and honored guests,” he began, “for more than a century, the Bennett Rose has represented the strength of our family.”

Applause filled the room.

Victor spoke about tradition.

He spoke about sacrifice.

He spoke about the obligation of each generation to protect what earlier generations had built.

Rachel watched the guards.

Marcus stood near the exhibition room.

Another guard remained beside the ballroom doors.

A third had moved near Emily.

Victor raised his champagne glass.

“To the future of Bennett Industries.”

The audience lifted their glasses.

At that exact moment, every light in the west gallery flickered.

The projection screen turned black.

The orchestra’s microphones produced a sharp burst of static.

Then the lights returned.

The interruption lasted less than a minute.

Victor continued as though nothing had happened.

But Marcus had vanished from his position.

Rachel checked the clock above the ballroom doors.

8:41.

She would remember that time.

At 8:42, Marcus returned.

At 8:43, Celeste Bennett walked into the ballroom holding a torn piece of black fabric.

At 8:44, Adrian received a message on his phone and left through the eastern doors.

At 8:45, Emily looked up at Rachel.

“Someone put something in my pocket.”

Rachel froze.

“What?”

“A man bumped into me.”

“Which man?”

Emily turned toward the crowd.

“I don’t see him now.”

Rachel reached for the blue jacket.

Before she could check it, Victor’s voice rose from the stage.

“Bring out the Bennett Rose.”

Two guards opened the gallery doors.

Marcus entered the exhibition room.

Seconds later, he shouted.

The music stopped.

The accusation followed exactly as if every movement had been rehearsed.

The guard pointed.

Victor ordered the search.

The ruby emerged from Emily’s pocket.

Then Thomas appeared with the flash drive.

And the ballroom lights went out.

In the darkness, Rachel heard three things.

Emily screaming.

A table overturning.

And a man whispering close to her ear.

“Give me the photograph.”

Rachel held Emily with one arm and struck toward the voice with the other.

Her hand connected with someone’s face.

A man cursed.

Then someone grabbed Rachel from behind.

Emily was pulled from her arms.

“Mommy!”

Rachel screamed her name.

Emergency lights flashed red along the walls.

The ballroom appeared in fragments.

Guests shoved toward the exits.

Guards shouted conflicting orders.

Rachel saw a man carrying Emily toward the eastern corridor.

She ran after him.

The man wore a security uniform.

He turned the corner.

Rachel followed.

A hand caught her wrist.

She spun and found Thomas.

“Let me go!”

“That is not Emily.”

Rachel looked again.

The security guard reached the end of the corridor. The child in his arms lifted her head.

It was not Emily.

It was another little girl wearing a blue jacket.

“A distraction,” Thomas said. “Victor planned for you to follow.”

“Where is my daughter?”

Thomas pointed upward.

On the second-floor balcony, Mrs. Bell held Emily tightly behind a stone column.

Relief nearly brought Rachel to her knees.

“How did she get there?”

“I moved her before the lights failed.”

“You touched my daughter?”

“I saved her.”

“From what?”

A gunshot cracked through the ballroom.

Guests screamed.

Thomas pulled Rachel behind a statue.

The projection screen suddenly flickered to life.

A video began playing.

The image was grainy, recorded from a hidden camera inside the exhibition gallery.

The timestamp read 8:41.

Marcus Reed entered the gallery during the brief power interruption.

He opened the supposedly secure case with a key.

He removed the Bennett Rose.

Then he turned toward the camera.

For one second, his face was clearly visible.

The crowd went silent.

Victor stood near the stage, staring at the screen.

Thomas stepped into the open.

“The child did not steal anything,” he said. “Your head of security planted it.”

Marcus drew a pistol.

But he did not aim at Thomas.

He aimed at Victor.

“You promised my family would be protected,” Marcus shouted.

Victor’s face changed.

“Lower the weapon.”

“You knew this would happen.”

“Knew what would happen?” Adrian demanded, returning through the eastern doors.

Marcus glanced toward the balcony.

That hesitation was enough.

Mrs. Bell struck his wrist from behind with a silver serving tray.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Thomas tackled him.

Two guards restrained Marcus.

Guests surged away.

Rachel ran upstairs and pulled Emily into her arms.

“You’re safe. You’re safe.”

Emily buried her face against Rachel.

Below them, Marcus twisted against the guards.

Victor pointed toward Thomas.

“Arrest him too. That footage was fabricated.”

Thomas held up the flash drive.

“Then let everyone see the rest.”

He plugged it into the ballroom computer.

A folder opened on the screen.

Inside were dozens of files.

Security footage.

Bank transfers.

Audio recordings.

And one video labeled:

DANIEL CARTER - FINAL STATEMENT.

Rachel stopped breathing.

Thomas looked up at her.

Victor lunged toward the computer.

Before the file could play, the screen went black again.

This time, the entire mansion lost power.

From somewhere beneath the floor came a deep mechanical explosion.

Then smoke began rising through the eastern vents.
