Chapter 14 - What Daniel Remembered

Three days later, Daniel woke in a secure hospital room.
Federal agents guarded the corridor.
News vehicles surrounded the building.
Victor Bennett remained in custody without bail. Marcus had agreed to cooperate. The police commissioner resigned before prosecutors announced charges against him.
Bennett Industries stock collapsed.
Adrian was appointed temporary director by the company’s emergency board. His first act was to release internal financial records and create a compensation fund for victims of the company’s illegal developments.
The public called it justice.
Rachel knew justice was not a headline.
Justice was Emily waking from nightmares and checking her jacket pockets.
Justice was Daniel learning that six years had passed.
Justice was sitting beside the man she had buried and accepting that survival did not return what had been lost.
Daniel looked older, thinner, and more fragile than the husband Rachel remembered.
But some things had survived unchanged.
He still folded the corner of every blanket.
He still disliked hospital pudding.
He still smiled with only one side of his mouth when he was uncertain.
Emily sat beside him, showing photographs from every year he missed.
“This was my first day of school.”
“You had purple shoes.”
“Mommy bought them too big so I could wear them longer.”
Rachel laughed softly.
Daniel looked at her.
“You did everything alone.”
“I had help.”
“Not enough.”
“No. Not enough.”
Emily moved to the window to draw.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Thomas told me what happened.”
“He is recovering.”
“Do you trust him?”
Rachel remembered Daniel’s warning.
“Not completely.”
“Good.”
“Why did you write that letter?”
Daniel looked toward Emily.
“Because Thomas discovered she was connected to Leonard before I did.”
“Connected how?”
“Not only by blood.”
Rachel waited.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Leonard created a legal trust for any unrecognized descendants. The trust controlled shares in Bennett Industries, property, and several sealed accounts. But the inheritance activated only if a descendant opened the vault with the Bennett Rose.”
“Emily opened it.”
“Yes.”
“So she owns part of the company?”
“Possibly a controlling share.”
Rachel looked toward her daughter.
“That explains why Victor wanted her.”
“Partly.”
“What is the rest?”
Daniel’s hand trembled.
“The trust also transferred guardianship of something Leonard called Project Morningstar.”
“What is that?”
“I do not know.”
“Thomas does?”
“He knows more than he admits.”
The hospital door opened.
Thomas entered slowly, his side bandaged beneath his shirt.
Emily smiled.
“Mr. Thomas.”
Rachel watched him carefully.
Thomas placed a new tablet on Daniel’s bed.
“I recovered one file before the Circle copied the server.”
The screen displayed security footage from Bennett Hall.
The timestamp was two hours before the gala.
A woman in an ivory gown entered the exhibition gallery.
She used Victor’s key to open the case and exchanged the replica brooch for the real one.
Rachel leaned closer.
“That is Celeste.”
Thomas shook his head.
“The face is similar, but the height and movement are wrong.”
He enhanced the image.
The woman turned slightly.
A thin prosthetic line was visible near her ear.
“A disguise,” Daniel said.
The footage continued.
The woman removed a phone and sent a message.
A reflection in the glass case revealed the screen.
EMILY WILL BE ACCUSED AT 8:45. BRING THE KEY.
“She sent the message from Daniel’s account,” Rachel said.
Thomas nodded.
“Then she placed the real brooch where Marcus would find it and left.”
“Who is she?”
“I traced the device to a private aircraft that departed this morning.”
“For where?”
“Geneva.”
Rachel thought of the brass key and the Swiss deposit box.
“Celeste took the key.”
“No,” Thomas said. “Celeste was found unconscious in a guest room shortly after the gala.”
Daniel stared at the woman on the screen.
“The head of the Circle was inside Bennett Hall before any of us arrived.”
Thomas displayed another image.
Airport security showed the same woman without the blond wig.
She had dark hair.
Her face was partially turned away.
But beneath her left ear was a crescent-shaped birthmark.
The same as Emily’s.
Rachel felt the room turn cold.
“Victor’s missing daughter.”
“Possibly,” Thomas said.
Emily looked up from her drawing.
The page showed a woman standing beneath a red rose.
Rachel had not told her about the airport image.
“Who are you drawing?” Rachel asked.
Emily shrugged.
“The lady from my dream.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“What dream?”
“She was at the ballroom. She told me she knew Daddy.”
Thomas moved closer.
“What exactly did she say?”
Emily looked at the drawing.
“She said Daddy opened the wrong door.”
“Anything else?”
May you like
Emily nodded.
“She said I would open the right one.”
