Chapter 12 - The Courthouse Junction

The underground vehicle had a seven-minute lead.
Sofia found a maintenance cart, but its control system required administrator authorization.
Dr. Mercer entered his credentials.
Access denied.
Victoria tried hers.
Access denied.
Jasmine placed the compass against the panel.
The engine started.
They raced through the tunnel.
The buried bells rang as they passed each junction, their metallic echoes following them beneath the town.
Jasmine imagined her father somewhere ahead.
Alive.
Injured.
Imprisoned.
Or represented only by a stolen identity file.
She forced herself not to decide which possibility was true.
The tunnel divided beneath the courthouse.
Sofia tracked the red signal toward the northern platform.
When they arrived, the transport vehicle was empty.
Two chairs stood inside.
Restraints hung open from both.
Blood marked one headrest.
Victoria found a silver whistle beneath the seat.
Evelyn’s whistle.
“She was here.”
Jasmine found a cassette recorder beside it.
Her father’s initials were scratched into the plastic.
She pressed play.
Aaron’s voice emerged through static.
“Jasmine, if you hear this, Crossroad has identified you as the route keeper.”
“What does that mean?” Daniel whispered.
The recording continued.
“The maps were designed to require human memory. Digital files can be changed. Physical maps can be destroyed. But a route taught through stories, habits, and choices can survive.”
Jasmine thought of childhood walks with her father.
The games he played.
Find the north wall.
Count the bridges.
Remember which road floods first.
He had been teaching her maps before she understood their purpose.
“The compass is not only a key,” Aaron said. “It stores access patterns based on the holder’s decisions. Every route you choose teaches it what you value.”
Jasmine gripped the compass.
“Crossroad wants the device because it can reveal every hidden junction. Do not give it to Celeste Hale.”
A sound occurred in the recording.
A door opening.
Aaron lowered his voice.
“Do not trust the person using my name.”
The cassette ended.
Jasmine stared at the recorder.
“What does that mean?” Sofia asked.
The terminal behind them activated.
A live camera feed appeared.
Elena sat inside a concrete room.
Her hands were bound.
A masked figure stood behind her.
Jasmine stepped toward the screen.
“Mom!”
Elena looked directly into the camera.
“Do not follow the signal.”
A distorted voice came through the speakers.
“Bring the compass to junction seventeen.”
Victoria shook her head.
“There is no junction seventeen.”
The masked figure placed a pistol against Elena’s head.
“Your father knows where it is.”
Jasmine raised the compass.
“I don’t know.”
“You will.”
The camera angle widened.
Someone else sat across from Elena.
A man with gray at his temples and a scar along his jaw.
Jasmine recognized him from old photographs.
Aaron Cole.
Her father lifted his head.
His eyes found the camera.
“Jasmine,” he said.
Elena closed her eyes.
Aaron leaned forward.
May you like
“Your mother is lying to you.”
The feed ended.
