Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Mercer Name
The arrests destroyed the public image of the Mercer family within hours.
News crews gathered outside the penthouse. Mercer Development’s board suspended Trent. Banks froze accounts connected to North Vale Advisory.
Dr. Bell attempted to leave the country but was detained at the airport.
The financial director cooperated with investigators in exchange for consideration. He provided emails, payment records, and internal messages showing that Evelyn had directed the scheme for almost a year.
Trent claimed he had been manipulated by his mother.
The recordings proved otherwise.
His voice appeared in meetings discussing Ava’s trust, Dr. Bell’s false evaluation, and the forged video authorization.
He had not designed every part of the plan.
He had willingly participated.
Ava spent one night at the hospital for observation. The baby remained healthy, and doctors found no serious physical injuries.
Alex stayed beside her until she fell asleep.
When Ava woke, he was sitting in a chair near the window, reading through messages on his phone.
“You should rest,” she said.
“So should you.”
“I did.”
“For twenty-seven minutes.”
Ava smiled for the first time in weeks.
Alex’s expression became serious.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I should have forced you to leave earlier.”
“You couldn’t force me. That’s the point.”
He nodded.
Ava reached for his hand.
“You helped me remember I had choices.”
Maya filed for an emergency protective order and divorce. She also requested that the court freeze Trent’s marital assets until the stolen trust funds were recovered.
Three months later, Ava entered the courthouse.
She was nearly nine months pregnant.
Trent sat across the room beside his attorneys. Without his tailored public image, he looked smaller.
Evelyn refused to look at Ava.
The prosecution presented the smart-home footage, bank records, forged authorization, medical conspiracy, and audio recordings.
Evelyn’s attorney argued that her words about the baby had been emotional exaggeration.
The judge listened without expression.
Then Alex’s team authenticated the time stamps.
The statement had been made moments after Trent used the wooden bat to threaten Ava.
The judge rejected Evelyn’s explanation.
Trent eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, unlawful restraint, and intimidation.
Evelyn went to trial, convinced the Mercer name would protect her.
It did not.
She was convicted of financial fraud, conspiracy, witness intimidation, and directing the attempt to declare Ava incapable for financial gain.
Dr. Bell lost his medical license and was convicted for his role in preparing fraudulent medical documents.
The stolen money was returned to Ava’s trust.
Mercer Development’s board removed Trent permanently and launched an independent investigation into the company’s practices.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Ava.
“Do you have a statement about the Mercer family?”
Ava looked at the cameras.
“They spent years believing their name placed them above consequences.”
