Chapter 7 - Ava’s Counterplan

Ava’s performance saved her.
She apologized for accusing Trent. She blamed stress and exhaustion. She told Evelyn she wanted to repair the family relationship.
Most importantly, she agreed to discuss the waterfront investment.
Trent became affectionate again almost immediately.
He brought home flowers. He prepared breakfast. He told Ava that the past few weeks had been difficult for everyone.
Evelyn was less convincing.
She watched Ava constantly.
Maya used the time to obtain the bank records. North Vale Advisory had received not nine thousand dollars, but four hundred thousand through a series of disguised transfers.
Someone had bypassed the trust’s security using a forged video authorization.
The video showed Ava sitting in a dark room, confirming the transaction.
It was not real.
The image had been generated using recordings from public interviews and family videos.
Alex’s technical team analyzed the file and found traces connecting it to a Mercer Development server.
The discovery transformed the case.
They were no longer dealing with family pressure.
They were dealing with organized financial fraud.
Maya contacted a financial crimes investigator, but they agreed not to move immediately. If Trent learned the investigation had begun, he might destroy evidence or move the stolen money.
Ava volunteered to help retrieve the internal records.
Alex refused.
Maya hesitated.
Ava insisted.
“They think I’m surrendering. This is the only time they’ll let me close enough.”
At Trent’s request, Ava attended a private meeting at Mercer Development.
She wore a discreet audio recorder beneath her jacket.
Trent, Evelyn, Dr. Bell, and the company’s financial director were present.
The investment agreement sat on the table.
Trent pushed a pen toward her.
“Once you sign, everything returns to normal.”
Ava read the first page.
The document authorized a transfer of two million dollars.
“I thought you needed five hundred thousand.”
“The project expanded.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Sign it.”
Ava looked toward Dr. Bell.
“Why is my doctor here?”
Trent answered.
“To reassure everyone that you’re making the decision voluntarily.”
Dr. Bell avoided her eyes.
Ava picked up the pen.
She let the silence stretch.
Then she placed it down.
“I want one condition.”
Trent’s jaw tightened.
“What condition?”
“I want proof that the earlier transfer has been returned.”
The financial director glanced at Evelyn.
Ava noticed.
Trent reached across the table and closed the folder.
“You said you wanted to repair this marriage.”
“I do.”
“Then trust me.”
Ava stood.
“Trust requires honesty.”
As she turned toward the door, Evelyn spoke.
“You won’t reach the elevator unless you sign.”
Everyone froze.
Evelyn smiled.
“I mean emotionally, of course.”
Ava looked directly at her.
May you like
“Of course.”
The recorder captured it all.
