Chapter 4 - The Custody Story
Sarah hired a forensic accountant named Marcus Lee.
Within four days, he discovered that Daniel had been moving Emily’s investment income into accounts connected to Carter Development Group.
Some transfers were authorized with electronic signatures.
Emily had never provided those signatures.
Others had been hidden inside documents Daniel gave her during the past two years.
The most disturbing discovery involved the penthouse.
Daniel had attempted to place it inside a family trust controlled by him. The transfer had not been completed because one notarized page contained an incorrect date.
If the date had been correct, Emily might have lost control of the home her father left her.
Marcus also found regular payments to Vanessa.
They were listed as consulting fees, but many corresponded with luxury hotels, jewelry purchases, and private travel.
The affair had been financed with Emily’s money.
Sarah advised Emily not to confront Daniel until they understood the full extent of the scheme.
“You and the children need somewhere safe to stay,” she said.
Emily arranged for Lily and Ethan to spend several nights with her older sister, Rachel. She told the children the penthouse needed repairs before the baby arrived.
Daniel objected immediately.
“You’re taking my children away from me.”
“They’re visiting their aunt.”
“Without asking me.”
“You’ve taken business trips without asking me.”
“That’s different.”
Everything Daniel did was different.
Everything Emily did was evidence against her.
The following day, the children’s school counselor called.
Daniel had contacted her privately and expressed concern about Emily’s emotional condition. He claimed Emily had become forgetful and unpredictable.
The counselor spoke gently.
“We want to make sure the children feel supported.”
Emily gripped the phone.
“Has Daniel provided examples?”
“He said there have been incidents at home.”
“What incidents?”
The counselor hesitated.
“He asked that we not discuss the details with you until he speaks with his attorney.”
Emily ended the call and immediately contacted Sarah.
Daniel was no longer preparing to leave the marriage.
He was preparing to take the children.
Sarah requested copies of school communications and medical records. Daniel’s pattern became clear.
He had spent months describing Emily as unstable to doctors, teachers, neighbors, and relatives.
Nothing he said was dramatic enough to attract immediate attention.
Together, however, the statements created a false history.
Emily’s pregnancy exhaustion became emotional instability.
Her questions about missing money became paranoia.
Her decision to change the penthouse access code became irrational jealousy.
Daniel had not merely lied.
He had planted a version of Emily in other people’s minds.
Three days later, he placed a thick envelope on the dining table.
“I had papers prepared.”
Emily looked inside.
The documents proposed that Daniel receive temporary custody of Lily and Ethan. Emily would be allowed supervised visits until a psychological evaluation was completed.
The agreement also gave Daniel control of the penthouse and company shares during the separation.
“You expect me to sign this?”
“I expect you to think about the children.”
“You want supervised custody of my own children.”
“Until you’re well.”
“I’m not ill.”
Daniel sighed as though speaking to a difficult child.
“Your refusal to recognize the problem proves there is a problem.”
Emily looked at the man she had married.
For the first time, she saw the plan in its complete form.
Daniel would take her money.
He would take her home.
Then he would use her resistance as evidence that she was unstable.
She closed the envelope.
“I need time.”
