Chapter 2 - The Woman in Red

Vanessa Cross entered the Carters’ lives as a business consultant.
Daniel introduced her at a company dinner eleven months before the confrontation.
“She specializes in restructuring,” he explained. “She’s helping us prepare for expansion.”
Vanessa was intelligent, polished, and impossible to embarrass. She always knew which questions to ask and when to offer a compliment.
At first, Emily liked her.
Vanessa remembered Lily’s interest in astronomy and brought her a book about planets. She praised Ethan’s drawings and volunteered to help with a charity event at his school.
She made herself useful.
Then she made herself necessary.
Daniel began inviting Vanessa to family dinners because they had “urgent contracts” to discuss. She joined them at their lake house for a weekend because Daniel claimed an investor meeting had been scheduled nearby.
Vanessa even appeared at the hospital when Emily experienced a pregnancy scare.
She arrived carrying flowers and coffee.
Looking back, Emily realized Vanessa had not come to support her.
She had come to study her.
The affair revealed itself through small details.
Vanessa knew which wine Daniel preferred at home. She knew he had a scar near his left shoulder, something she could not have learned from a business meeting. She once corrected Emily about the time of Daniel’s flight before quickly pretending she had read it on his calendar.
When Emily asked Daniel directly whether he was involved with Vanessa, he laughed.
“Do you hear yourself?”
“I’m asking a question.”
“You’re accusing me because I work with an attractive woman.”
“I didn’t say anything about her appearance.”
“You didn’t have to.”
He spent the next two days sleeping in the guest room and telling Lily that her mother needed space.
That was how Daniel punished Emily.
He did not shout.
He withdrew affection, changed the story, and allowed the children to believe Emily had caused the distance.
Weeks later, Vanessa began appearing at the penthouse even when Daniel was not home.
She claimed she needed documents from his office.
One afternoon, Emily found Vanessa standing in the children’s playroom, looking at framed family photographs.
“You have beautiful children,” Vanessa said.
Emily noticed she was holding a photograph of Lily as a baby.
“Daniel keeps his business documents in the office.”
Vanessa returned the photograph to the shelf.
“Of course.”
Before leaving, she paused beside Emily.
“You should rest more. Stress can make pregnancy difficult.”
The words sounded caring.
The smile did not.
Emily watched her walk toward the elevator in a long red coat.
That evening, she asked Daniel why Vanessa had access to the penthouse.
“She doesn’t.”
“She entered with her own access code.”
Daniel hesitated for less than a second.
“She must have gotten it from my assistant.”
“Your assistant can’t create residential access codes.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Do you want me to lose an important consultant because you’re jealous?”
Emily understood the trap.
Any answer could be used against her.
If she protested, she was jealous.
If she remained silent, Vanessa would continue entering her home.
That night, Emily changed the penthouse access code.
The following morning, Daniel changed it back.
He did not tell her.
Two days later, Emily tried to enter after taking Ethan to school.
Her code no longer worked.
She stood outside her own home for nineteen minutes until the building manager arrived.

Daniel later called it a technical error.
Emily recorded it in her journal.
