Chapter 13 - They Heard Enough

"Tell them whose apartment you're stealing, asshole!"
The ballroom went silent.
Caroline slammed the folder onto the marble table.
Documents scattered.
Margaret's champagne tipped.
Michael grabbed Caroline's wrist.
"Shut the hell up and sit down."
She jerked free.
"Don't fucking touch me."
Guests gasped.
Then Margaret made the mistake Caroline would later replay more often than any recording.
She took the bouquet.
Threw it down.
Stomped on Evelyn's silver locket.
"You married into our family, bitch. Learn your damn place."
Caroline looked at the crushed flowers.
Then smiled.
"Thank you."
Margaret frowned.
"For what?"
"For doing that in front of two hundred witnesses."
Caroline lifted her phone.
"Perfect. Now let's discuss the apartment you two already tried to steal."
Michael lunged.
Caroline held up one finger.
"Touch it and I'll play the recording."
Margaret whispered, "Michael, stop her."
Caroline pressed play.
Michael's recorded voice thundered through the speakers.
"Once she signs after the wedding, Mom, we can finally move the apartment into Halcyon. She won't even realize what she signed until it's too late."
Chaos.
Guests shouted.
Charles Harper stood.
"What did you do?"
Margaret ordered him to sit down.
He refused.
The recording continued.
Margaret's voice:
"She thinks the apartment is sentimental. That's why she won't sell. Once we're married, she won't have a choice."
Michael's recorded laugh.
"Everybody has a choice, Mom. Until they sign it away."
Caroline watched Michael's face collapse.
Then came the part she had not intentionally selected.
"What about Reed Holdings?"
Margaret's voice answered.
"One thing at a time."
Caroline's heart stopped.
Michael moved toward the sound technician.
"Turn it off!"
The technician raised both hands.
"I'm not touching anything."
Another segment played.
Michael's voice.
"If Caroline finds out what happened to Thomas, this is over."
The room changed.
Susan made a strangled sound.
Charles looked at Margaret.
"What happened to Thomas?"
Margaret said nothing.
Caroline turned toward her.
"Good question."
Michael pushed toward Caroline.
Three guests blocked him.
"Move!"
One of them was Caroline's cousin Daniel.
"No."
Michael shoved him.
Daniel shoved back.
Security started toward them.
Margaret screamed, "This is private!"
Caroline raised the microphone.
"No."
Her voice filled the ballroom.
"It stopped being private when someone forged my signature."
Guests murmured.
"It stopped being private when Halcyon Residential Holdings tried to borrow twelve million dollars against property I never agreed to transfer."
Charles Harper turned toward his wife.
"Twelve million?"
Margaret snapped, "Charles."
"What the hell is she talking about?"
Caroline looked at him.
"Ask your son about seven point four million dollars."
Charles stared at Michael.
Michael said nothing.
The silence answered.
Charles staggered backward.
"You told me the company was clean."
Michael looked away.
"You told me there was no debt."
"Not now, Dad."
"Seven million?"
"Not now."
Charles slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Michael stared at his father.
Charles's hand trembled.
"You used her?"
Margaret stepped forward.
"We did what was necessary."
Charles turned.
"We?"
Margaret realized what she had said.
Too late.
Caroline raised the phone.
"You mean this?"
Another recording played.
Margaret:
"Your job is to get her through Saturday."
Michael:
"And after?"
Margaret:
"After the transfer clears, she can do whatever she wants."
A bridesmaid started crying.
Caroline's mother covered her mouth.
Michael rushed forward and knocked the microphone from Caroline's hand.
It struck the marble floor.
Guests screamed.
Caroline stared at him.
"You stupid bastard."
Her voice no longer needed amplification.
"They heard enough."
Then the rear doors opened.
Six people entered.
Two federal agents.
Two financial crimes investigators.
Lena.
Martin Hale.
Michael looked at them.
His expression became blank.
Margaret backed away.
"What is this?"
Lena held up identification.
"Margaret Harper, Michael Harper, Ross Kellerman is already in custody."
Michael's head snapped toward her.
"Ross?"
Lena continued.
"We have warrants covering Halcyon Residential Holdings, associated financial accounts, and electronic devices."
Margaret looked at Caroline.
Pure hatred.
"You did this."
Caroline bent and picked up Evelyn's crushed locket.
"No."
She closed it in her hand.
"You did."
Agents moved toward Michael.
Then every phone in the ballroom rang.
Not some.
Every phone.
Nearly two hundred devices lit up at once.
A strange electronic tone filled the room.
Guests looked down.
Caroline's phone vibrated in her hand.
Unknown sender.
One message.
The apartment was never the target.
Caroline's blood turned cold.
A second message arrived.
Ask Susan what she signed eleven years ago.
May you like
Caroline slowly lifted her eyes toward her mother.
Susan was already crying.
