Chapter 11 - The Ceremony Built on a Lie

Michael cried when Caroline appeared.

Actual tears.

For one dangerous moment, she hated him less.

He stood beneath an arch of white roses wearing the navy suit they had chosen together six months earlier.

Two hundred guests turned toward Caroline.

Music filled the ballroom.

Her mother smiled through tears.

Charles Harper looked proud.

Margaret looked victorious.

Caroline walked toward the man who had courted her as part of a plan.

Each step felt unreal.

When she reached Michael, he whispered, "You look incredible."

"Thank you."

He took her hands.

His were warm.

The officiant spoke about trust.

Caroline almost laughed.

He spoke about partnership.

She nearly pulled away.

Then the vows came.

Michael had written his own.

"Caroline, you taught me that love can feel like home."

Her throat tightened.

Because once, she had believed that sentence.

"I promise to protect what we build together."

Protect.

Caroline looked into his eyes.

Did he know what he sounded like?

Did he believe himself?

Was every word false?

Or were human beings uglier than that?

Could a man love someone while planning to steal from her?

The officiant turned to Caroline.

She had written vows.

Beautiful ones.

They were folded inside a box upstairs.

She didn't use them.

"Michael."

Her voice was steady.

"I promise that from this day forward, I will never ignore what is right in front of me."

A few guests smiled.

Michael's expression flickered.

Caroline continued.

"I promise to protect the truth, even when the truth is painful."

Margaret shifted in her seat.

"And I promise never again to confuse trust with permission."

Michael's smile disappeared.

The officiant hesitated.

Caroline smiled gently.

"That's my vow."

They exchanged rings.

They kissed.

Guests applauded.

Michael whispered against her cheek.

"Interesting vows."

Caroline whispered back.

"You'll understand later."

The signing occurred in a private room immediately afterward.

Michael signed the license.

Caroline signed.

The officiant signed.

Martin placed it inside his briefcase.

Michael barely looked.

He was too focused on the other folder.

"Five minutes," he said.

Caroline pretended confusion.

"For?"

"The financial paperwork."

"Now?"

"We discussed it."

"No. You and your mother discussed it."

Michael's face tightened.

"Don't start."

"At our wedding?"

"Exactly."

He closed the door.

The hidden camera inside Martin's pen was recording.

Michael placed the Halcyon documents on the table.

"Sign page twelve and page eighteen."

Caroline sat.

"What's page eighteen?"

"Management consent."

She flipped to it.

A transfer schedule was attached.

Apartment 18A.

Future rights associated with Reed Preservation Trust.

There it was.

Caroline's pulse spiked.

"What is this?"

Michael leaned over.

"Boilerplate."

"It names my father's trust."

"So?"

"How do you know about it?"

Michael froze.

Only for half a second.

Then he straightened.

"Ross found it."

"How?"

"Public records."

"It's private."

Michael's patience cracked.

"Caroline, sign the damn paper."

"No."

He stared at her.

"Excuse me?"

"No."

"I don't have time for this."

"You have the rest of our lives."

"Stop."

"What happens Monday?"

His face changed.

"What?"

"Bellweather funds Halcyon Monday."

Michael went silent.

Caroline looked up at him.

"Seven point four million, Michael?"

He stepped backward.

"Who have you been talking to?"

"Is that what you owe?"

His jaw tightened.

"You don't understand."

"Explain."

"I made investments."

"With Adrian Vale?"

Michael looked toward the door.

"You need to stop saying that name."

"Your mother said the same thing."

"You spoke to her?"

"This afternoon."

"What did she tell you?"

"Enough."

Michael paced once.

Twice.

Then crouched in front of Caroline.

His expression changed into something frightened.

Real frightened.

"You have to sign."

"No."

"Please."

"No."

"Caroline."

His voice broke.

"If you don't sign, he destroys everything."

"Who?"

Michael looked toward the camera pen without seeing it.

"Vale."

"Who is Vale?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"What happened to my father?"

Michael's face emptied.

Caroline saw it.

The answer.

Not knowledge.

Terror.

"What happened to him?"

Michael stood.

"Ask your mother."

Caroline stopped breathing.

"What?"

Michael realized his mistake.

He grabbed the papers.

Caroline stood.

"What does my mother have to do with this?"

"Nothing."

"You just told me to ask her."

"I was angry."

"Michael."

He reached the door.

Caroline seized his arm.

He jerked away.

"Do not."

"What did my mother do?"

Michael looked at her.

For the first time, there was pity in his face.

"You really think Evelyn was protecting you from the Harpers?"

May you like

He opened the door.

"She was protecting you from everybody."
