Chapter 15 - the child behind door 407

Evelyn waited until morning before making her decision.

She called Naomi first.

Then Walter.

Then the federal investigator assigned to Daniel’s case.

No one would enter the abandoned hospital alone.

The Bellmere Children’s Hospital had closed eighteen years earlier after a fire damaged its eastern wing.

The city planned to demolish the building, but ownership disputes had delayed the project.

The structure stood behind rusted gates, its windows covered with boards.

Investigators searched the upper floors.

Evelyn, Naomi, Walter, Caroline, and two federal agents descended into the basement.

Room numbers had faded from most doors.

At the end of a narrow corridor, they found a metal door marked 407.

Evelyn inserted the brass key.

It turned.

The room beyond was not a hospital room.

It was an archive.

Shelves covered every wall.

Files had been arranged by family name.

Hale.

Mercer.

Cole.

Reed.

Naomi stopped when she saw her own surname.

“My family was never involved with Bellmere.”

Caroline looked at her.

“Are you certain?”

Naomi did not answer.

Walter opened the Hale cabinet.

Inside were photographs of himself taken throughout his life.

School pictures.

Wedding pictures.

Images of him entering banks and government offices.

Daniel had been watching him for decades.

Evelyn found the Mercer cabinet.

The first drawer contained files about her grandmother.

The second contained records about Caroline.

The third bore Evelyn’s name.

The final drawer was labeled Mia.

Evelyn opened it.

Inside were medical records from before Mia was born.

Ultrasound images.

Genetic reports.

A custody petition Trevor had prepared but never filed.

Naomi read the first page.

“He planned to claim you were medically incapable and obtain sole custody.”

Walter closed his eyes.

Evelyn continued searching.

Beneath the petition lay the Northstar account documents.

Five million dollars had been transferred into a trust for Mia.

Trevor was not the trustee.

Daniel was not the trustee.

The listed trustee was Margaret Hale.

“That can’t be right,” Walter said. “Margaret never knew about this account.”

A federal agent photographed every page.

Caroline opened a smaller cabinet near the back wall.

Inside were children’s drawings.

Most showed a lake, a house, and two boys.

One boy had silver hair.

The other had dark hair.

Every drawing was signed with the same name.

Lucas.

Walter stared at them.

“Who is Lucas?”

Caroline’s face filled with fear.

“I thought he died.”

“Who was he?” Evelyn demanded.

Before Caroline could answer, lights flickered on above them.

The abandoned hospital had no electricity.

A speaker crackled in the ceiling.

A man’s voice filled the archive.

“Welcome to room 407.”

Everyone looked upward.

The voice belonged to the hidden caller from Evelyn’s old phone.

An agent ordered the team upstairs to locate the power source.

The speaker continued.

“Daniel failed. Trevor failed. Walter arrived far too late, as usual.”

Walter moved beneath the speaker.

“Show yourself.”

“In time.”

A monitor on the wall turned on.

The screen displayed a live image of Margaret’s hospital room.

Her bed was empty.

Walter pulled out his phone.

“Security was outside her door.”

The camera view changed.

Margaret was walking through an underground corridor beside a younger man.

He had dark hair and carried a metal case.

Caroline covered her mouth.

“Lucas.”

The man on the screen turned toward the camera.

He resembled Trevor.

Not slightly.

Exactly.

The same eyes.

The same jaw.

The same controlled expression.

Evelyn felt the room tilt around her.

Walter whispered, “Who is he?”

Caroline began to cry.

“The boy Margaret took from the lake.”

The monitor displayed another location.

Trevor sat inside a police interview room.

Across from him was an empty chair.

The door opened.

The man called Lucas entered and sat down.

Trevor stared at him as though looking into a mirror.

Lucas placed the metal case on the table.

He opened it.

Inside was Evelyn’s missing star necklace, a second brass key, and a photograph of two newborn babies lying beside each other.

The speaker crackled again.

“Walter Hale raised one boy.”

Caroline gripped the edge of the cabinet.

“Margaret saved the other.”

Walter looked at her.

“What are you saying?”

She could not answer.

On the monitor, Lucas leaned toward Trevor and said something the archive microphone did not capture.

Trevor’s expression changed from confusion to horror.

Then Lucas raised one page from the metal case.

At the top were the words:

PATERNITY AND IDENTITY REASSIGNMENT

The date was thirty-four years earlier.

The day Trevor was born.

Evelyn’s phone began ringing.

The caller identification showed Trevor’s name.

Naomi looked at her.

“Do not answer until we trace it.”

Evelyn watched the two identical men on the screen.

One was locked inside the interview room.

The other was holding the phone.

She answered.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a voice identical to Trevor’s whispered:

“You married the wrong brother.”

The lights went out.

When they returned, every file labeled Hale had disappeared.

And from somewhere behind the walls, a child began knocking.

Three slow knocks.

A pause.

Then three more.

Evelyn followed the sound to a section of shelving that had not been there moments earlier.

Behind it, she found another metal door.

A fresh label had been attached to the center.
