Chapter 10 - the son with two fathers
Everyone turned toward Trevor.
He looked as shocked as Walter.
“That makes no sense,” he said.
Margaret entered the chamber.
Her gaze moved over him with painful tenderness.
“I lied to you.”
Trevor stared at her.
“You said Daniel was my father.”
“I said that because I needed you to fear him.”
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“You always were talented at manipulating children.”
Margaret ignored him.
“Walter is your biological father.”
Walter exhaled slowly.
Trevor looked from one parent to the other.
“Then what does Daniel Junior mean?”
Caroline answered.
“It is not a person’s legal name. It is a beneficiary designation.”
Naomi understood first.
“A coded account.”
Caroline nodded.
“The foundation stored evidence in two protected branches. Evelyn Mercer and Daniel Hale Junior. One protected my daughter’s inheritance. The other held records of Daniel’s crimes.”
Daniel moved toward them.
Adrian raised his weapon, but Walter stepped into his path.
“You are not leaving with those records.”
Daniel looked at his brother.
“You still think you can command me.”
“No. I think you’ve spent your life running because you know what happens when people see the truth.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“You were always Father’s favorite.”
“I was the son he could control,” Walter replied. “There is a difference.”
Trevor struggled to stand.
“You used me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You were useful.”
The words seemed to break something inside Trevor.
For years, he had pursued Daniel’s approval without understanding whose approval it was.
The money.
The secret meetings.
The pressure to obtain Evelyn’s signature.
All of it had been part of Daniel’s attempt to reach the protected foundation files.
Adrian searched the boxes more urgently.
“It isn’t here,” he said.
Daniel turned.
“What?”
“The Daniel Junior ledger.”
Caroline held up the recorder.
“It was never a paper ledger.”
She pressed a button.
Daniel’s voice filled the chamber.
He was younger in the recording, but unmistakable.
“I moved the money through Northstar. Robert Cole signed every transfer. Walter will take the blame if anyone discovers it.”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“My father went to prison because of you.”
“Your father was paid well.”
“You said Walter framed him.”
“I told you what you needed to hear.”
Adrian’s weapon lowered slightly.
Daniel noticed.
“You work for me.”
“No,” Adrian said. “I worked for the man who promised to clear my father’s name.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
Adrian backed away.
Naomi raised her phone.
“The police have received the live recording from this room.”
Daniel laughed.
“There is no signal underground.”
“No cellular signal,” Naomi agreed. “The archive has a wired emergency transmitter.”
Margaret looked at Walter.
“I installed it after the boat.”
Daniel’s confidence finally cracked.
He moved toward Caroline.
Trevor intercepted him.
They collided against the shelves.
Boxes fell around them.
Walter pulled Trevor away as police sirens sounded outside.
Adrian placed his weapon on the floor.
Daniel ran toward the lake entrance.
Margaret watched him disappear into the darkness.
“He knows the tunnels,” she said.
“So do the police,” Naomi replied.
But when officers reached the far entrance, Daniel was gone.
A boat had been waiting on the lake.
Adrian was arrested.
Margaret and Caroline were taken to a hospital for evaluation and protection.
Trevor went with them under police supervision.
Before leaving, he looked at Evelyn.
“I didn’t know Daniel planned to hurt you.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I thought I could control the situation.”
“You tried to control me.”
Trevor lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “You are only beginning to know.”
At the hospital, Caroline told Evelyn the truth about her disappearance.
After discovering Daniel’s financial network, she had received photographs of five-year-old Evelyn walking to school.
The threat was clear.
Caroline staged her death and joined Margaret in hiding.
They intended to return after gathering enough evidence.
Then the lake attack left Margaret seriously injured.
Caroline spent years moving her from one safe location to another.
“Why didn’t you contact me when I became an adult?” Evelyn asked.
“Daniel was watching you.”
“So you let me marry into his family?”
“I didn’t know Trevor was working with him.”
“You could have warned me.”
“I tried.”
Caroline removed a silver star necklace.
“I sent this to you before your wedding.”
Evelyn stared at it.
“I never received it.”
“Trevor signed for the package.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The betrayal was deeper than she had imagined.
Trevor had not merely been manipulated.
He had hidden the truth whenever it threatened his plans.
Outside the room, Walter waited.
“He wants to speak to you,” Caroline said.
“Trevor?”
“No.”
