Chapter 7 - The Unsent Call
Margaret arrived at the hospital moments after Daniel was taken into a treatment room.
Her handbag slipped from her shoulder as she ran toward the triage desk. Nurses asked her to sit down, but she demanded to know what had happened.
Marissa stood nearby, crying.
“He became confused in the car,” she claimed. “He tried to jump out before I stopped.”
Margaret almost believed the performance.
Then Detective Aaron Cross entered with a uniformed officer.
Aaron had tracked Daniel’s emergency location after receiving a brief signal from the old phone. Officers searched the car and found the device under the passenger seat.
When the recording played in the waiting area, Marissa’s story collapsed.
She tried to explain that the voice was distorted.
She insisted Elliot had pressured her.
She claimed Daniel had misunderstood a private argument.
Then the treatment room door opened.
Daniel appeared in a hospital gown, supported by a nurse. He was pale but conscious.
“Mom,” he said.
Margaret crossed the room and embraced him carefully.
Marissa moved toward them.
“Daniel, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
Daniel looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.
Not love.
Not anger.
Certainty.
“I heard what you said to Elliot in Dad’s workshop.”
Marissa froze.
Margaret looked at Daniel in surprise.
Daniel explained that he had installed a motion-activated security recorder in the workshop after giving his mother the key. It had uploaded the audio to a private account before Marissa and Elliot searched the building.
Aaron’s officer handed him another evidence bag containing a small recording device.
Marissa turned toward the exit.
Two officers blocked her path.
Aaron spoke calmly.
“You are being detained in connection with financial fraud, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.”

Elliot was arrested in the hospital parking garage minutes later.
He had been waiting for Marissa to return.
