Chapter 1 - The Voice in the Emergency Room

“The person who wanted Daniel silenced knew exactly when he would arrive.”

Detective Aaron Cross lowered the sealed evidence bag and stared directly at Marissa Hale.

The hospital triage area suddenly felt colder.

Margaret Hale sat rigidly on the wooden bench beneath the bright TRIAGE sign. Her brown handbag lay open on the floor, its contents scattered near her burgundy loafers. A few minutes earlier, she had been shouting, demanding to see her son. Now she could barely breathe.

Marissa stood several feet away in her cream fur coat, one hand covering her mouth. Tears shimmered on her cheeks, but something in her expression had changed. It was no longer grief.

It was fear.

A uniformed officer approached Aaron and spoke quietly.

“The recording was recovered from the Hale residence. Forensics confirmed it was made shortly before Daniel left for the hospital.”

Aaron held up the phone inside the evidence bag.

On the dark screen was an unsent call to Margaret.

“Play it,” Margaret whispered.

Marissa turned sharply.

“No. She shouldn’t hear it here.”

Aaron studied her. “Why not?”

“Because Daniel is injured. She’s already distressed.”

Margaret rose unsteadily.

“That is my son’s phone. If he tried to call me, I want to know why.”

Aaron pressed a button through the protective covering.

Static filled the waiting area.

Then Daniel’s voice emerged, low and breathless.

“Mom, I finally found the accounts. Marissa knows I found them. If I don’t reach you tonight, take the blue folder from the old workshop and give it to Detective Cross.”

Marissa’s face lost all color.

The recording continued.

A door opened somewhere near Daniel.

A woman’s voice spoke in the background.

“You should have stayed out of it.”

Margaret looked at Marissa.

Everyone in the room recognized the voice.

Marissa stumbled backward.

“That could be anyone.”

But the recording was not finished.

Daniel spoke again.

“Marissa, put the phone down.”

A sharp sound followed, then hurried movement. There was no scream, only Daniel’s breathing and Marissa’s cold reply.

“You were never supposed to discover what your father left behind.”

The recording ended.

Silence spread through the triage area.

Marissa looked toward the hallway as though calculating the distance to the exit.

The uniformed officer stepped between her and the doors.

Aaron slipped the phone into his coat pocket.

“Marissa Hale, you are not leaving this hospital.”
