Chapter 5 - the custody trap

Jeffrey moved faster than I expected.
That told me he had prepared for this.
Detective Marcus Reed listened while I explained that Liam was my biological child, that no custody order prevented me from taking him, and that I had brought him directly to a hospital.
He was calm.
Professional.
He looked at the medical report.
Then listened to part of my recording.
His expression changed.
"This doesn't sound like a kidnapping case."
"It isn't."
"Your husband says you've been living outside the country for two years."
"For work."
"He says you abandoned the family."
"I called constantly."
"Do you have records?"
"Yes."
I did.
Months of call logs.
Messages.
Photographs.
Calendar entries showing London travel tied directly to Hale Meridian.
Most importantly, company board minutes approving my overseas assignment.
Jeffrey could describe me as absent.
He could not erase why I was absent.
Detective Reed wrote something.
"There's likely going to be a family court filing."
"I assumed."
"Get an attorney."
"I already called one."
Her name was Hannah Price.
She had represented one of my father's companies years earlier before moving into family and fiduciary litigation.
When I called at six in the morning, she answered.
By ten, she was sitting beside me at the hospital.
"Jeffrey filed for emergency temporary custody," she told me.
"On what basis?"
"Abandonment, emotional instability, removal of the child from the marital home, and concern that you may leave the country."
I stared at her.
"He's afraid I'll leave?"
"He isn't afraid of that."
"What is he afraid of?"
"That you'll stay."
I almost smiled.
Hannah opened her folder.
"We're filing our response today. Hospital documentation. Your recording. Trust freeze confirmation. Corporate travel records. Everything."
"What about Rosa?"
"If she's willing, an affidavit."
"She's frightened."
"Then we protect her information as much as we can."
I looked at Liam.
He was sitting near the window with a hospital volunteer.
"How fast can we get him away from Jeffrey permanently?"
Hannah's expression softened.
"Family court doesn't work in permanently on day one. We secure the immediate situation first."
I hated that answer.
But I respected it.
"Then secure it."
By afternoon, the hospital cleared Liam to leave with me under a temporary safety arrangement pending court review.
I booked a suite at a hotel under my maiden name.
Hannah advised me not to return to the house alone.
I didn't.
Instead, I met Rosa in a quiet conference room at Hannah's office.
The woman who entered looked older than I remembered.
Her hair was shorter.
Her eyes were tired.
The moment she saw Liam, she covered her mouth.
Liam stared at her.
Then ran.
"Rosa!"
She dropped to her knees.
He threw his arms around her.
She cried into his hair.
"I'm sorry, baby."
I turned away because I couldn't watch without crying too.
After Liam settled with an assistant in the next room, Rosa opened a canvas bag.
Inside were printed photographs.
Liam sleeping on the floor.
Liam beside a locked door.
Liam eating from a plastic plate beneath the dining table.
A photograph of Noelle standing over him.
A photograph of Cynthia carrying Austin while pointing toward the floor.
Then a short video.
The date was seven months earlier.
Jeffrey stood in the dining room.
Liam was crying.
Noelle said, "Stop that noise."
Liam reached for Jeffrey.
"Daddy."
Jeffrey looked down.
Then said, "Go where Grandma told you."
Liam crawled beneath the table.
Jeffrey walked away.
I stopped the video.
My hands were numb.
Rosa whispered, "There's more."
I looked at her.
She handed Hannah a small black memory card.
"What is this?"
"Old security footage."
"From the house?"
Rosa nodded.
"Mr. Hale thought he deleted everything after he fired me."
Hannah turned the card over.
"How did you get it?"
"The security system made a local backup in the utility closet. I used to change the storage cards every month."
"What's on it?"
"I don't know everything."
"Everything?"
Rosa looked at me.
"But one night I heard Mr. Hale and Mrs. Noelle talking about Liam's trust."
My pulse jumped.
"What did they say?"
"Mrs. Noelle said they needed the boy in the house until the money transfer was finished."
Hannah and I exchanged a look.
"What transfer?"
Rosa shook her head.
"I don't know."
Then she reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out an envelope.
"I found this in the trash the week before they fired me."
Inside was a DNA test.
Liam Hale.
Alleged father: Jeffrey Hale.
Probability of paternity: 0.00 percent.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Rosa looked ashamed to hand it to me.
"After this appeared, everything became worse."
I stared at the paper.
"I never cheated on Jeffrey."
"I believe you."
Hannah took the document.
"Was this test ever shown to you?"
"No."
"Did Jeffrey ever accuse you?"
"No."
That was what made no sense.
If Jeffrey truly believed Liam wasn't his, why had he never confronted me?
Why had he never filed for divorce?
Why had he kept Liam in the house?
Unless the test was useful for something other than truth.
I looked at Hannah.
"Find out where this came from."
She nodded.
Then Rosa whispered, "There's one more thing."
May you like
I looked at her.
"Cynthia was the person who brought the envelope into the house."
