Chapter 7 - The Door He Could Not Lock

Grant did not shout.
His calmness frightened Elena more.
He picked up her wedding ring and turned it between his fingers.
“You are injured, emotional and being manipulated by Ava.”
Elena stood beside her sister.
“I am leaving.”
“You will return before morning.”
“No.”
Grant looked at Marissa.
“Go upstairs.”
She remained beside the sink.
“Marissa.”
“I’m leaving too.”
Sloane stared at her.
“You ungrateful coward.”
Grant’s gaze returned to Elena.
“If you walk out tonight, I will file the medical petition before sunrise. Your father’s company will learn that you abandoned your home during an episode.”
Julian had warned Elena about this possibility.
Grant would try to turn her escape into evidence.
Elena lifted her chin.
“Then make sure you spell my name correctly.”
She walked toward the foyer with Ava and Marissa.
Grant followed them.
At the front door, the security keypad flashed red.
Access denied.
Elena entered her code again.
The lock did not release.
Grant stopped several feet behind her.
“The system was changed after your last attempt to leave.”
Ava turned.
“You locked her inside?”
“For her safety.”
Marissa looked horrified.
“You said the gates malfunctioned.”
Grant ignored her.
Ava took out her phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
Grant smiled.
“And telling them what? A homeowner updated his security system?”
“Elena owns half this estate.”
“Not according to the deed.”
Elena looked at him.
The home had been purchased using money from her family trust. Grant managed the transaction, claiming joint ownership would simplify taxes.
“What did you do?”
“You signed the documents.”
“You told me they were renovation permits.”
Grant shrugged.
“You should read what you sign.”
Ava dialed.
Before she could complete the call, Marissa entered a code into the wall panel.
The lock clicked.
Grant stared at her.
“How did you know that?”
“Sloane gave me the emergency code.”
Sloane’s face twisted with anger.
Marissa opened the door.
Cold air entered the foyer.
Ava pulled Elena outside.
Grant caught Elena by the sleeve, but she tore free. The fabric ripped near her shoulder.
Ava stepped between them.
Security cameras above the entrance recorded every movement.
Grant noticed them.
His hand fell.
“Elena,” he called as she crossed the driveway. “You have no accounts without me.”
She continued walking.
“No car.”
She did not stop.
“No house.”
Ava opened the passenger door of her rental vehicle.
Grant’s voice followed them.
“And when the board sees what you really are, you will have no company.”
Elena got inside.
Ava drove through the gates before Grant could deactivate the emergency code.
Marissa sat in the back seat, crying silently.
They met Julian at his office.
He had already prepared statements, emergency trust documents and a request preventing Grant from exercising Elena’s corporate authority.
Elena signed only after reading every page twice.
Julian watched her.
“You are safe tonight, but Grant will move quickly.”
“Then we move faster.”
Ava placed the recorded kitchen confession on his desk.
“Can this activate the protection clause?”
“It supports a pattern, but we need Grant connecting the coercion directly to Elena’s shares.”
“He threatened her with the medical petition.”
“Did the recording capture it?”
Ava checked.
The first file began after that conversation.
“No.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Grant had made dozens of threats when no device was present. The one time they needed his voice, she had none.
Julian opened a desk drawer and removed a small audio recorder.
“Grant believes the anniversary dinner is his deadline. He will still need Elena to sign.”
“I am not returning to the estate,” Elena said.
“You will not.”
“Then how do we record him?”
Ava looked toward the invitation displayed on Julian’s desk.
The anniversary celebration was scheduled at Hartwell Grand’s flagship hotel.
A property Elena controlled.
“He expects the dinner to continue,” Ava said.
Julian understood.
“So we let him believe Elena is surrendering.”
Elena looked between them.
Ava took her hand.
“You will be surrounded by guests, hotel security and board members.”
“He may still try something before the dinner.”
“Then we make sure every attempt brings us closer to the truth.”
Marissa spoke from the back of the room.
“Sloane will help him.”
Ava turned.
“Can you convince her you regret leaving?”
“I can try.”
Elena studied Marissa.
“You would go back?”
“If Sloane trusts me, she may tell me what Grant plans.”
“It is dangerous.”
Marissa gave a bitter laugh.
“I helped build the danger.”
Julian placed a second recorder on the desk.
“We do not need anyone to act recklessly. We need documents, messages or a clear confession.”
Marissa picked up the recorder.
“I know where Grant keeps the Larkspur contracts.”
“Where?” Ava asked.
“In the study safe.”
Elena remembered the safe behind Grant’s collection of antique maps.
“I do not know the combination.”
Marissa did.
Grant had used the date of his first meeting with Victor Hale.
The same date printed at the bottom of the Northstar merger agreement.
Julian looked at each woman in turn.
“The anniversary dinner is in eleven days. Until then, Grant must believe he is still in control.”
Elena looked down at the torn sleeve of her dress.
May you like
For years, control had been the only language Grant understood.
This time, she would let him believe the lie until the room was full.
