THE RECORDING SHE BROUGHT / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - The Clause Beneath the Marriage

Ava arrived in the city the following morning but did not go to the Mercer estate.

She checked into a small hotel across from the courthouse and called Julian Cross.

Julian had served as Richard Hart’s personal attorney for nearly twenty years. After Richard’s death, Grant persuaded Elena to replace him with the legal team representing Mercer Holdings.

Ava had always considered that Elena’s first serious mistake.

Julian arrived carrying an old leather case and a sealed copy of Richard’s trust.

“You said Elena used the blue-room phrase,” he said.

Ava nodded.

“Has she ever used it before?”

“Not once.”

Julian removed his glasses.

“Then we assume she cannot safely leave.”

“She can leave. She thinks she cannot.”

“That belief may be the most important part of Grant’s strategy.”

Ava walked to the window.

For years she had lived three thousand miles away, working as a documentary producer. Elena had insisted everything was fine whenever they spoke. When Ava questioned the canceled visits or Elena’s unexplained silences, Grant always supplied a reasonable explanation.

Elena was tired.

Elena was working.

Elena needed space.

Three weeks earlier, Elena sent Ava a photograph of a broken silver brooch. It had belonged to their mother. Beneath the photograph, Elena wrote only four words.

He said I fell.

Ava turned from the window.

“What is in the trust?”

Julian opened the document.

“Richard suspected someone might try to control Elena through her shares. He included a protection clause.”

“What kind of protection?”

“If Elena can demonstrate coercion connected to her voting rights, her shares immediately move into an independent trust. Grant cannot receive them through marriage, divorce, incapacity or death.”

Ava stared at him.

“Does Grant know?”

“He requested a copy of this trust eight months ago.”

The anniversary, the medical agreement and the merger suddenly formed one clear picture.

Grant did not merely want Elena’s signature.

He needed it before she documented what he was doing.

“Why would Elena’s shares matter so much?” Ava asked.

“The Northstar merger requires seventy percent board approval. Victor Hale controls twenty-two percent through investors aligned with him. Grant has been gathering the remaining votes.”

Victor Hale had been Richard Hart’s chief financial officer and closest business adviser. After Richard’s death, Victor became chairman of the board.

Elena trusted him like family.

“He told Elena the merger would save the company,” Ava said.

Julian’s expression remained guarded.

“Hartwell Grand is not failing.”

He showed her a financial summary.

The hotels were profitable. Debt was manageable. Reservations had increased. The merger was not a rescue.

It was a sale disguised as a partnership.

Northstar Crown would acquire the most valuable properties, while Hartwell Grand carried the remaining liabilities.

“Victor is dismantling the company,” Ava said.

“And Grant receives a consulting payment if the transaction closes.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-four million dollars.”

Ava sat down slowly.

“Does Elena know?”

“Not yet. I need evidence strong enough that Grant cannot explain it away.”

Ava took out her phone.

“I can record him.”

“Grant will be careful around you.”

“Then he cannot know I believe Elena.”

Julian closed the trust document.

“You intend to enter the house and pretend you support him.”

“I intend to make him confident.”

“Your sister may not understand.”

“She will.”

Ava hoped that was true.

That afternoon, she called Grant.

He answered with obvious surprise.

“Ava. Elena said you were filming overseas.”

“I came back early.”

“Why?”

“Because she sent me another dramatic message.”

Grant was silent.

Ava continued before he could ask which message.

“I’m tired of being pulled into your marriage. I want to speak to both of you and settle this before the anniversary.”

His tone softened immediately.

“I have been telling Elena the same thing. She needs stability.”

“I agree.”

The lie tasted bitter.

Grant invited her to dinner.

When Ava arrived at the Mercer estate, Elena was standing near the staircase.

For one dangerous second, relief filled Elena’s face.

Ava ignored it.

She embraced Grant first.

“Thank you for putting up with all of this.”

Elena’s expression collapsed.

Grant smiled over Ava’s shoulder.

“I knew you would eventually understand.”

During dinner, Ava agreed when Grant described Elena as emotional. She nodded while Sloane recounted the supposed accidents. She listened while Marissa claimed Ava’s career had made Elena jealous.

Elena said almost nothing.

After dessert, Grant left to take a call.

Ava passed behind Elena’s chair and dropped a folded note into her lap.

Elena waited until everyone looked away before opening it.

I believe you. Julian found Father’s protection clause. Do not sign anything.

Elena closed her hand around the paper.

Across the table, Ava continued speaking to Sloane as though nothing had happened.

Then Marissa’s phone lit up beside her plate.

A banking notification appeared on the screen.

Deposit received: Larkspur Event Strategies, $25,000.

Ava saw the name.

So did Elena.

Marissa quickly turned the phone over.

For the first time that evening, Elena smiled.

Grant had brought Ava into the house believing he had gained an ally.

Instead, he had placed a witness at his own table.
