THE QUIET MAN MOVED / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - every word beneath the blanket

Rebecca did not place Lily inside the prepared blanket immediately.

She wrapped a weighted doll in it and left the bundle in the upstairs nursery while the real baby remained with Dana in a locked guest room.

The plan lasted eleven minutes.

Mrs. Crowley arrived breathless.

“Vanessa knows.”

“How?”

“She checked the nursery camera. She saw you carry Lily into the guest room.”

Rebecca ran upstairs.

The guest room door was open.

Dana lay unconscious beside the bed, breathing steadily but unresponsive.

The window curtains moved in the breeze.

Lily was gone.

Rebecca screamed her name.

Walter appeared at the end of the hallway.

“She took her.”

He looked toward the service corridor.

They raced down the stairs.

Music played in the backyard. Guests smiled, drank champagne, and gathered around the decorations, unaware that anything was wrong.

Judith stood near the fire pit holding Lily.

The baby was wrapped in the cream blanket containing Walter’s recorder.

Vanessa stood beside her with a drink.

Rebecca moved forward.

“Give me my daughter.”

Several guests turned.

Judith smiled calmly.

“You were resting.”

“You drugged Dana.”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Give me Lily.”

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Stop making a scene.”

“Move.”

“Everyone can see how unstable you are.”

Rebecca looked around.

Phones had appeared in several hands.

Judith had built the perfect stage.

“Mom,” Rebecca said, forcing her voice to steady, “Lily is hungry. Hand her to me.”

“She ate twenty minutes ago.”

Rebecca’s blood went cold.

“You fed her?”

“I know how to care for a baby.”

“What did you give her?”

“Formula.”

“Lily refuses formula.”

Judith looked down.

The newborn stirred safely in her arms.

Walter entered the patio and stopped near the porch.

He did not look at Rebecca.

Vanessa followed her gaze and laughed.

“Dad won’t help you.”

Walter lowered his eyes, returning to the role they expected.

Judith shifted Lily slightly.

The recorder remained hidden beneath the blanket.

Rebecca took another step.

“Why are you doing this?”

Judith’s smile vanished.

“Because you were given every opportunity and wasted them.”

“You stole me from someone.”

“I rescued you.”

“You changed my name.”

“Your old name belonged to a life with no future.”

“And the other girl?”

A flicker passed through Judith’s eyes.

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Don’t.”

Rebecca saw it.

Vanessa feared the older secret more than the current crime.

“What happened to the girl called Lily?”

Judith’s arms tightened around the baby.

“That child was unsuitable.”

“Unsuitable for what?”

“For the responsibility Evelyn intended.”

“She was a child.”

“She was weak.”

Vanessa whispered, “Mom.”

But Judith had spent too many years waiting to justify herself.

“I gave them homes, education, and purpose. Margaret would have raised them in poverty. Evelyn’s money needed a worthy heir.”

“You experimented on children to control a trust.”

“I corrected what life had damaged.”

Rebecca felt sick.

“Where is the other Lily?”

Judith looked toward the flames.

Vanessa spoke quickly.

“She ran away.”

Judith’s head snapped toward her.

The recorder captured every word.

Rebecca heard Walter behind her.

“Keep them talking.”

Vanessa noticed his lips move.

Her face changed.

She looked at the baby blanket.

Then at Walter.

“What did you do?”

Judith followed her gaze.

Walter stepped away from the porch.

Vanessa reached for Lily.

Rebecca moved at the same time.

The guests shouted.

Judith turned toward the fire pit, trying to keep the baby away from Rebecca.

The flames were still several feet away, but one careless step could close the distance.

Rebecca’s terror overwhelmed every part of the plan.

“Give me my daughter—now!”

Vanessa blocked her and smiled with desperate cruelty.

“Rebecca deserved nothing. I deserved this baby first.”

Judith shifted the bundle toward the stone edge.

Walter moved.
