Chapter 10 - the locked summerhouse

Martin Lowe did not appear at the hearing.

Neither did Dr. Krell.

The judge reviewed the allegations, Dana Pierce’s preliminary concerns, and Walter’s pharmacy receipt. She refused to remove Lily immediately, but she ordered Rebecca to remain at Ashford House under temporary observation until a full evaluation could occur.

Judith considered the decision a victory.

Rebecca understood it as a cage with legal approval.

Martin’s signature troubled her most.

He had warned her, protected the trust documents, and disappeared. Either he had betrayed her or someone was using his name.

That evening, Walter showed her an old invoice found in Noah’s desk.

It came from a locksmith.

The listed address was not Ashford House.

It belonged to an abandoned summerhouse near the eastern edge of the property.

Rebecca remembered the building from childhood. Judith had forbidden both daughters from entering it, claiming the floor was unsafe.

Walter had a key.

They waited until midnight.

Vanessa’s bedroom light went dark. Judith remained in the library for another hour before retiring.

Rebecca left Lily with Dana Pierce, who had begun doubting the family’s story and agreed to remain overnight without informing Judith.

Walter and Rebecca crossed the garden with flashlights.

The summerhouse stood beneath overgrown vines. Its windows were covered from the inside.

Walter unlocked the door.

The floor was stable.

The room smelled of paper, dust, and damp wood.

Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.

Noah had turned the abandoned building into an archive.

Rebecca found photographs, bank statements, copies of medical records, guardianship petitions, and handwritten timelines.

A map of Ashford House covered one wall.

Red marks showed hidden rooms, service passages, cameras, and listening devices.

On the desk sat a laptop.

Walter pressed the power button.

The screen displayed a password request.

Rebecca tried Lily’s birth date.

Incorrect.

She tried Noah’s birthday.

Incorrect.

Walter noticed a sentence written on the edge of the map.

The house remembers what the family erases.

Rebecca entered CLARA.

The laptop unlocked.

Folders filled the screen.

EVELYN TRUST.

KRELL.

WEST NURSERY.

FIRST CHILD.

SECOND CHILD.

NOAH ACCIDENT.

Rebecca clicked the final folder.

Inside were photographs of Noah’s damaged vehicle and a mechanic’s report.

The brake line had been cut.

Walter gripped the desk.

“He knew.”

“He knew someone tried to kill him.”

The report was dated the morning of the accident.

An audio file appeared beneath it.

Rebecca pressed play.

Noah’s voice filled the summerhouse.

“Rebecca, if you hear this, I failed to get you and Lily out in time.”

She covered her mouth.

Walter turned away.

Noah continued.

“Judith is not acting alone. Vanessa wants the trust, but the money is only part of it. They have been identifying children connected to the Hale bloodline for decades.”

Rebecca paused the recording.

“What does that mean?”

Walter looked at the folder labeled SECOND CHILD.

“Open it.”

Inside was a scanned birth certificate.

The child’s name had been covered by a black rectangle.

Mother: Margaret Vale.

Father: Unknown.

A note from Noah appeared beneath it.

The second child was not taken for the trust. She was taken because Judith believed Evelyn’s selection process could be recreated.

Rebecca read the sentence again.

“What selection process?”

Walter opened the trust folder.

Evelyn Hale had believed wealth should pass to the most capable descendant, not automatically to the eldest. She had arranged secret assessments for children in the family.

Judith had transformed those assessments into something crueler.

“She tested children,” Rebecca whispered.

Walter nodded.

“To find one she could control.”

Rebecca opened another audio file.

Vanessa’s voice emerged from the laptop.

“Rebecca was a failure because she became too independent. The next one must be younger.”

Judith answered.

“The next one must believe we rescued her.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

Then Noah spoke from somewhere closer to the microphone.

“You’re not taking my daughter.”

A violent sound followed.

The recording ended.

Behind them, the summerhouse door slammed shut.

The lock turned from the outside.

A woman’s voice came through the wall.

May you like

Vanessa.

“You should have stayed confused, Rebecca.”
