Chapter 4 - A Promotion Dinner
Ava cried when she saw the wooden bird.
She sat on the bathroom floor with the shower running so Damian would not hear. For years, she had believed Raymond had abandoned her. Now she understood that someone else had built the distance between them.
Her sadness quickly became anger.
Not only at their father.
At Raymond too.
You could have tried harder, she wrote.
He answered immediately.
You are right.
No excuses. No defense. I should have come to you and allowed you to decide whether you wanted me in your life.
Ava expected him to explain himself. His simple acceptance made it harder to remain angry.
She did not forgive him that day.
She did, however, trust him enough to continue writing.
Raymond never told her what to do. He did not demand that she leave Damian immediately. He helped her create options.
Ava photographed important documents and stored them in a secure account. She recorded dates and descriptions of Damian’s behavior. Leah agreed to keep a small suitcase at her apartment.
Raymond arranged for an attorney to speak with Ava anonymously. The attorney explained protective orders, property rights, and the safest ways to prepare.
Ava learned that leaving was not one decision.
It was a series of small decisions made quietly.
Damian noticed her change.
She stopped arguing.
She became careful, calm, and agreeable.
He mistook preparation for surrender.
Then Damian received news that his promotion interview had been moved forward.
He came home carrying champagne.
“Raymond Sterling himself will review the final candidates,” he announced.
Ava kept her expression neutral.
“Congratulations.”
“He rarely meets candidates at my level. Someone must have recommended me.”
Damian began talking about influence, executive access, and the kind of house they could buy after his promotion.
Ava looked around the living room.
She no longer wanted a larger house.
She wanted a door she could close without being afraid.
Two days before the interview, Damian learned that Raymond would be attending a charity event near their neighborhood. He decided to invite his boss to dinner.
“It will show initiative,” he said.
“Does he accept invitations from employees?”
“He’ll accept mine.”
Raymond did.
When Damian received the confirmation, he walked through the house as if he already owned the company.
The dinner was scheduled for Friday at six.
Ava sent Raymond a message.
You accepted?
His reply came seconds later.
Only because you said the timing might help.
Ava had been waiting for a safe opportunity to remove her remaining documents and leave while Damian was distracted. Raymond’s presence would give her time and protection.
The original plan was simple.
Raymond would arrive.
Damian would focus on impressing him.
Ava would excuse herself, collect the prepared bag hidden in the laundry room, and walk outside to Leah’s waiting car.
A domestic abuse advocate and two police officers would remain nearby. They would not enter unless Ava requested help or the situation became dangerous.
Raymond would not reveal their relationship until Ava was safely outside.
Everything depended on Damian behaving as he usually did in front of powerful people.
