The guests expected Lucas to leave immediately.Instead, he walked to the altar with Lily in his arms.The flowers were still there. The candles still burned. The musicians sat frozen with their instruments in their laps.Lucas turned to the guests.“I invited you here today to witness a marriage,” he said. “That marriage will not happen.”Lily rested her head against his shoulder.Lucas continued, “But since you are here, I want you to witness a different promise.”Eleanor stood behind him, tears on her face.Lucas knelt in front of Lily.“Sweetheart,” he said, “I am sorry.”Lily’s chin trembled. “Did I ruin your wedding?”Lucas took her small hands.“No. You saved me from making the worst mistake of my life.”She blinked.He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small gold bracelet. It had been Grace’s. He had planned to give it to Lily at the reception as a symbol of their new family.Now, it meant something different.“I promised your mother that you would never feel like a guest in your own home,” Lucas said. “I forgot to listen carefully. I forgot that love is not just what people say in front of me. It is how they treat you when I am not there.”Lily began to cry again, but this time she stepped closer.Lucas fastened the bracelet around her wrist.“I choose you,” he said. “Today, tomorrow, always.”Lily threw her arms around his neck.The first person to clap was Margaret Whitmore.Then Eleanor.Then the staff.Then the entire hall.The applause grew, not like celebration, but like justice.Outside, Vanessa’s wedding car left the manor gates without a bridegroom.Inside, Lily smiled for the first time that day.
