Chapter 14 - The House Hears Everything

Emergency lights flickered on.
Red light filled the library, turning every face unfamiliar.
Victor entered with two private security guards.
Neither guard looked comfortable.
Behind them came Martin’s replacement attorney and several relatives Victor had summoned from the guest wing.
“I apologize for the hour,” Victor said. “But certain individuals have entered the property illegally and attempted to remove estate assets.”
Mara displayed her badge.
“Your communications system is interfering with an active investigation.”
“Blackwood House has always had poor reception.”
“You activated a signal blocker.”
Victor smiled.
“Prove it.”
Evelyn stepped toward the table.
“You wanted the will reading. Let’s have it.”
Nathan placed Rose’s codicil beside the original trust.
Victor looked at the documents.
“They are fabricated.”
“The seal is authentic,” Nathan said.
“Rose lacked capacity.”
“Her doctors documented otherwise.”
“Doctors can be mistaken.”
“Recordings are harder to misunderstand.”
Evelyn placed the hospital device on the table.
Rose’s final instruction filled the room.
Don’t let them sell the house.
Relatives began whispering.
Victor looked at Celeste.
“You brought them here.”
“No,” Celeste said. “Mother did.”
Claire stepped into the light.
The room went silent.
An older cousin crossed herself.
Victor stared at Claire as though a ghost had entered the house.
“You were supposed to stay gone.”
Claire placed the blue ledger on the table.
“So were the missing accounts.”
Victor turned toward the guards.
“Remove her.”
Neither man moved.
Mara had already shown them the warrant request on her phone before the signal vanished. They had no intention of interfering with a financial-crimes investigation.
Claire opened the ledger.
“Every transfer is here. Dates, companies, signatures, payments to Martin, payments to Vale Security, and the loan you secured against Blackwood House.”
Victor’s control finally cracked.
“You think Rose was innocent? She hid children. She falsified identities. She staged Claire’s death.”
“To protect Evelyn,” Claire said.
“To control everyone.”
Evelyn faced him.
“You used her fear to steal from her.”
“I kept this family alive.”
“You kept yourself rich.”
The library doors opened.
Martin Voss entered between two investigators.
Mara’s backup team had disabled the signal blocker from outside.
Martin’s face was gray.
He avoided Victor’s eyes.
“You brought him here?” Victor asked.
Mara answered.
“He offered cooperation.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.”
Martin pointed to the ledger.
“The entries are accurate. Victor directed the transfers. I prepared the false deeds and the revocation.”
Gasps spread around the room.
Victor moved toward Martin.
Mara stepped between them.
“Do not.”
Celeste rose.
“I signed several documents.”
Victor turned on her.
“You signed everything.”
“Because you told me Adrian would take the girls if I refused.”
“You enjoyed the money.”
“I enjoyed not being afraid for one day.”
Celeste’s voice broke, but she continued.
“I will testify. I will return everything in my name. I will accept whatever follows.”
For the first time, Victor had no one standing beside him.
Mara read the warrant.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult.
Unlawful confinement connected to Celeste’s abduction.
Obstruction of an investigation.
Victor stared at Evelyn while the investigators approached.
“You think this is over.”
“The sale is over,” Evelyn said. “Your control is over.”
“You still don’t know who Rose protected.”
“I know who she loved.”
Victor gave a strange smile.
“That was always her greatest weakness.”
He was led from the library.
Martin followed.
The storm outside began to weaken.
Nathan formally read Rose’s codicil.
Blackwood House would not become luxury residences.
The eastern cottages would be restored.
Haven House would reopen.
The families whose properties had been taken through Victor’s companies would receive restitution from recovered assets.
Celeste would cooperate with prosecutors and surrender her shares in Mercer Development.
Claire would enter protective custody until Adrian Vale’s network could be investigated.
Evelyn would become trustee of Blackwood House, not as a private inheritance, but as the guardian of Rose’s final work.
It was not the fortune Victor had expected to steal.
It was something better.
A future no single family member could sell.
When the reading ended, the relatives left quietly.
Dawn appeared beyond the windows.
Evelyn stood before Rose’s altered portrait.
Claire joined her.
“Did Rose know you would come back?” Evelyn asked.
“She hoped.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“I saw Adrian’s people near your school when you were twelve. Every time I moved closer, they appeared.”
“Did you know my sister survived?”
Claire looked at the second baby.
“I knew someone took her.”
“Do you know her name?”
“Rose called her Lucia.”
Celeste approached with a small envelope found inside the frame.
For the daughter who stayed.
Evelyn opened it.
Inside was a railway ticket dated for the following evening.
Greenhaven to Bellweather.
One passenger.
Lucia Vale.
A knock echoed from the entrance hall.
Three measured strikes.
The same knock that had announced the investigators.
A housekeeper entered the library.
“There is a woman at the front door.”
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“Who?”
May you like
The housekeeper swallowed.
“She says she is Evelyn Vale.”
