THE PORTRAIT THAT LIED / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Voice Beneath the Floor

The tape began with Rose coughing.

Chairs moved.

A door closed.

Then Claire Hart spoke.

Her voice was older than Evelyn remembered, but it carried the same warmth preserved in childhood videos.

“Victor has accelerated the sale,” Claire said. “He knows someone found the Red Vale accounts.”

Rose answered.

“Evelyn found nothing. I kept her away.”

“You should have told her years ago.”

“And made her spend her life looking over her shoulder?”

“She already does. She simply doesn’t know why.”

A third voice joined them.

Celeste.

“What happened to the original ledger?”

“I have it,” Claire replied.

“You cannot keep moving it.”

“I cannot leave it where Victor can find it.”

Rose lowered her voice.

“Adrian wants more than the ledger.”

“He wants the Haven House intake records,” Claire said. “They prove Lena gave birth to twins.”

Evelyn held the recorder closer.

Celeste spoke again.

“We should tell Evelyn her sister survived.”

“No,” Claire said immediately.

“Why?”

“Because we don’t know who she became.”

Rose sounded tired.

“We know Adrian raised her.”

“We know someone raised her,” Claire corrected. “Adrian could have placed her anywhere.”

Nathan paused the tape.

“Claire knew the second child lived.”

Evelyn looked at Celeste.

“You said she disappeared.”

“She did. Claire contacted Mother only through coded letters. I never knew where she was.”

“Yet you were in this room with her.”

“Two weeks ago. It was the first time I had seen her since the funeral we staged.”

Evelyn forced herself to remain calm.

“You buried an empty coffin.”

“We buried the unidentified victim from the crash.”

“Who was she?”

Celeste shook her head.

“We never learned.”

Nathan restarted the tape.

Claire continued.

“Lena did not survive the Haven House fire.”

Rose answered sharply.

“You did not see her body.”

“I saw the stairwell collapse.”

“You saw smoke and confusion.”

“I saw enough.”

Then a fourth voice entered.

Female.

Soft.

Familiar.

“Stop lying to her.”

The room on the tape became silent.

Claire whispered one name.

“Lena.”

A chair fell.

Celeste began crying.

Rose said, “How did you find us?”

The unknown woman replied, “You left Evelyn in the hospital under her real name.”

“That record was sealed.”

“Nothing remains sealed forever.”

Claire’s voice hardened.

“Where is the other child?”

The tape clicked.

The rest had been erased.

Evelyn stared at the recorder.

“That woman claimed to be Lena.”

Celeste nodded.

“She looked exactly like the woman from the cemetery photograph.”

“Why didn’t you follow her?”

“She left through the old tunnel before we recovered from the shock.”

“What did she want?”

“The family portrait.”

Evelyn remembered Rose’s last whisper.

Look behind the family portrait.

“The safe was a trap,” she said.

Celeste looked at her.

“What safe?”

“The one behind the portrait.”

“There is no safe behind the family portrait.”

Evelyn felt a chill.

“I saw the compartment.”

“A compartment, yes. Mother used it for letters. But the wall behind that painting is brick.”

Nathan stood.

“Then someone installed a safe recently.”

“Victor,” Celeste said.

Mara entered from the corridor carrying a blue folder.

She had found a copy of the ledger beneath the floorboards. It proved Victor and Martin had redirected more than twelve million dollars through shell companies.

It was enough to begin a criminal case.

But not enough to stop the house sale before Friday.

“We need the original trust documents and seal,” Nathan said.

“We have the seal,” Evelyn replied.

“We still need the codicil Rose told me she signed.”

“Where is it?”

“Behind the portrait, according to her instructions.”

Celeste shook her head.

“Mother never placed important documents behind that painting.”

“Then what did she hide there?”

Celeste looked toward the tape recorder.

“People.”

Mara’s phone vibrated.

A message had been sent from Celeste’s number while they were all in the room.

It contained a photograph of the empty library at Blackwood House.

The family portrait had been removed from the wall.

A man stood behind it, holding a crowbar.

Martin Voss.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

Bring the seal to the old station, or Celeste disappears permanently.

Celeste looked at her own hands.

“I’m standing right here.”

Evelyn understood first.

“The message was not written for us.”

Nathan looked toward the dark hallway.

“It was written for whoever is watching Celeste’s phone.”

At that moment, the tape recorder restarted by itself.

The unknown woman’s voice filled the room.

“Evelyn, your sister has already found you.”
