THE PHOTOGRAPH IN THE WALLET / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - BENEATH THE CHAPEL

The old chapel stood beyond the northern gardens.

Its roof had partially collapsed, and ivy covered the stone walls. The Whitmore family claimed it had not been used since the 1940s.

Thomas insisted that was a lie.

At midnight, Julian led a small group to the building: Celeste, Ivy, Ellen, Thomas, Arthur, and two officers.

Sebastian was ordered to remain inside the mansion under guard.

The chapel door opened with Margaret’s key.

Inside, moonlight fell through the broken roof. Dust covered the pews. A stone altar stood at the far end.

Celeste approached it.

“I have been here before.”

She touched a carved sun at the altar’s center.

Two hollow spaces formed a circle.

Half a sun on one side.

Half on the other.

Ivy removed her pendant.

Celeste did the same.

They placed the pieces into the stone.

Nothing happened.

“The note said blood,” Arthur reminded them.

Julian objected, but Celeste pricked her finger on a broken edge of silver. Ivy did the same.

A drop of blood fell onto each pendant.

Deep beneath the chapel, machinery moved.

The altar slid sideways.

Stone steps descended into darkness.

Ellen grabbed Ivy’s arm.

“You are not going down there.”

“I need to know.”

“Margaret’s note warned you about me.”

“I don’t believe it.”

“You don’t know whether to believe it.”

Ivy looked into Ellen’s eyes.

“That’s why I have to go.”

They descended together.

The underground chamber was larger than the chapel above. Metal cabinets lined the walls. Old computer terminals sat beneath plastic sheets. Shelves held boxes marked with dates and laboratory codes.

At the center stood a glass case.

Inside were two sealed birth certificates.

Clara Elise Vale.

Rose Miriam Vale.

Celeste placed her hand against the glass.

“I have a birthday.”

Ivy stood beside her.

“So do I.”

Arthur located the locking mechanism and opened the case.

The certificates named Elias Vale and Miriam Vale as their parents.

Celeste was born on April 16, 1984.

Rose was born on September 2, 1990.

Ivy calculated silently.

“I’ll turn thirteen this year.”

Her official records had listed her as twelve with an estimated winter birthday.

Celeste looked at the certificate again.

“We lost even our birthdays.”

Julian searched the filing cabinets.

He found legal documents confirming the trust.

Control of the Vale patents and shares would pass to both daughters when Rose reached eighteen, provided both survived and voluntarily accepted the inheritance.

If either daughter died before then, control would remain temporarily with the Whitmore guardians.

Arthur read the final clause.

“If the sisters are deliberately separated by a guardian or beneficiary, every person involved forfeits all claim and faces civil liability.”

“Sebastian would lose everything,” Ivy said.

“Not only Sebastian,” Arthur replied.

A sound came from the far side of the chamber.

Thomas raised his flashlight.

Someone had moved behind the cabinets.

“Margaret?” he called.

No answer.

They found a narrow room containing old surveillance equipment.

One monitor was still active.

The screen displayed live images from inside Whitmore Mansion.

The library.

The entrance hall.

The medical room.

Sebastian’s bedroom.

Someone had been watching the estate from beneath the chapel.

Julian followed the cables into the wall.

“This system is modern.”

Ellen stared at the screen showing Sebastian’s empty room.

“So Margaret was hiding here?”

“Maybe,” Celeste said.

Another monitor switched on.

A recorded video began playing.

Eleanor Whitmore appeared on the screen.

She was older than Celeste remembered but unmistakably alive.

The date in the corner was from two months earlier.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

“Clara, if you are seeing this, then Rose has returned.”

Celeste stepped forward.

Eleanor continued.

“You will be tempted to believe that I stole you for money. Sebastian will encourage that belief because it hides the greater danger.”

The image flickered.

“Your father’s work was never a battery. He discovered a way to identify inherited memory patterns through blood. The Vale trust was created not to protect wealth, but to protect the two of you.”

Ivy looked at Celeste.

“Inherited memories?”

Eleanor’s recorded voice continued.

“You carry information no document contains. Together, you can reveal the location of the Meridian Archive.”

The screen distorted.

A second person appeared behind Eleanor.

Only a shadow was visible.

Eleanor turned.

Her face filled with fear.

The recording ended.

At that exact moment, the chapel doors slammed shut above them.

The lights in the chamber turned red.

A mechanical voice announced, “Containment initiated.”

Metal shutters began covering the exits.

Then Ellen pulled a pistol from beneath her coat.
