THE PHOTOGRAPH IN THE FILE / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Daughter Richard Chose

Clara did not return to her parents’ house immediately.

Cole took her to a secure apartment owned by a retired intelligence analyst named Evelyn Hart, the woman whose identity Nathan had used for the deposit box.

Evelyn was sixty-two, sharp-eyed, and unimpressed by titles.

“Nathan said you were stubborn,” she told Clara. “He failed to mention how polite you look while ignoring sensible advice.”

“What sensible advice am I ignoring?”

“You came here instead of leaving the country.”

“I’m not abandoning my husband’s name.”

Evelyn nodded toward Clara’s stomach.

“You’re protecting more than a name now.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Clara did not answer.

They examined the ledger throughout the afternoon. Evelyn created a map connecting payment codes to Meridian projects. Many transactions passed through Hale Capital Advisory. Others led to shell companies controlled by Victor Sloane.

One code appeared more frequently than any other.

SC-9.

Silver Crown Nine.

Clara remembered Nathan’s warning on the photograph, although she had not yet seen the photograph itself. The silver crown would appear later. For now, it was merely an unexplained symbol repeated in the ledger’s margins.

At seven that evening, Clara received a call from Vanessa.

She almost ignored it.

Then she saw twelve missed calls from her mother and answered.

“Where are you?” Vanessa demanded.

“Safe.”

“Dad says you stole confidential documents from a bank.”

“Dad knows about the bank?”

A pause.

“He received a call.”

“From whom?”

“I don’t know. Some executive.”

“Victor Sloane?”

Vanessa went silent.

Clara closed her eyes.

“You know him.”

“Julian works with him.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Victor has been to the house.”

“How many times?”

“I don’t keep track of Dad’s business meetings.”

“Did Nathan ever attend one?”

“No.”

“Did they ever discuss Atlas Crown?”

“What is Atlas Crown?”

The confusion in Vanessa’s voice sounded genuine.

Clara looked at Cole. He was listening through an encrypted receiver.

“Where is Julian?” Clara asked.

“At the office.”

“Are you sure?”

“I watched him leave.”

“Check his location.”

“You’re being paranoid.”

“Check it.”

Vanessa protested, but Clara heard her moving through the house. A minute later, she returned.

“His phone says he’s at Meridian.”

Cole wrote something on a notepad and turned it toward Clara.

Julian’s badge entered Hale Capital twenty minutes ago.

Clara read the message.

“Vanessa, go to Dad’s office.”

“Why?”

“Don’t ask anyone. Just go.”

The line remained open as Vanessa walked downstairs. Clara heard a door open, then the click of a lamp.

“There’s no one here.”

“Look at the desk.”

“What am I looking for?”

“Anything involving Meridian, Nathan, or military contracts.”

“You think Dad had something to do with Nathan’s death?”

Clara did not answer quickly enough.

Vanessa’s voice hardened.

“That’s insane.”

“I hope it is.”

Drawers opened.

Paper shifted.

Then Vanessa stopped.

“What did you find?” Clara asked.

“There’s a photograph.”

“Of what?”

“You and Nathan.”

Clara gripped the phone.

“Where?”

“At your wedding. Dad, Julian, and Victor are standing behind you.”

“That isn’t unusual.”

“Someone circled Nathan’s face.”

Cole moved closer.

“Is there writing?” Clara asked.

Vanessa breathed unevenly.

“A date. The date is three weeks before his mission.”

A door closed in the background.

Vanessa whispered, “Someone’s here.”

“Leave the office.”

Footsteps crossed the room.

“Vanessa?”

It was Richard.

She tried to sound casual.

“I was looking for the property plans.”

“At night?”

“Julian said they might be here.”

Richard did not answer.

Clara heard him take the phone from Vanessa.

“Clara,” he said.

Her heart began pounding.

“Give the phone back.”

“You have frightened your mother and manipulated your sister. Enough.”

“I know about Meridian.”

Richard’s breathing changed.

“I don’t know what you think you know.”

“I know Nathan owned the company.”

This time, the silence was absolute.

“I know about the trust,” Clara continued. “I know about Atlas Crown. I know Hale Capital moved the payments.”

“Come home.”

“No.”

“Come home before you make accusations you cannot take back.”

“Did you change Nathan’s mission assignment?”

Richard’s voice dropped.

“You have no idea what your husband was involved in.”

“Then explain it.”

“I will explain everything when you are sitting in front of me.”

“You’ve had forty-one days to explain.”

Richard’s tone softened.

It was the voice he had used when Clara was a child and he wanted obedience to feel like affection.

“You are my daughter.”

“You keep saying that as though it answers every question.”

“You are carrying my grandchild.”

“And you just threatened me with that fact.”

Richard exhaled.

“Vanessa has a future. Julian has a future. This family has spent decades building something that Nathan was prepared to destroy because he believed his judgment mattered more than everyone else’s.”

Clara looked at Cole.

There it was.

Not a confession, but close enough.

“What did you choose, Dad?”

Richard hesitated.

“What?”

“The note said you chose which daughter survives.”

“I didn’t write any note.”

“But you understand it.”

Vanessa spoke in the background.

“Dad, what is she talking about?”

Richard ignored her.

“Clara, Nathan put all of us in danger. If you continue, you will do the same.”

“Give the phone back to Vanessa.”

“Come home.”

“Give it back.”

The call ended.

Clara tried Vanessa’s number again.

No answer.

Ten minutes later, Julian called.

“Your sister is fine,” he said.

“Let me speak to her.”

“She is upset.”

“Let me speak to her.”

“You have always done this, Clara.”

“Done what?”

“Made Vanessa feel like she had to choose between you and her family.”

“She is my family.”

“Not after tonight.”

Clara heard a car engine in the background.

“Where are you taking her?”

“I’m protecting my wife.”

“From whom?”

“From the woman who inherited something she doesn’t understand.”

The call ended.

Cole immediately contacted a surveillance team.

Vanessa and Julian’s car was located twenty minutes later.

It was parked near the river.

The driver’s door stood open.

Julian was gone.

Vanessa was sitting alone in the passenger seat, holding Richard’s photograph against her chest.

Written on the back was a message in Nathan’s handwriting.

Vanessa knows where the second archive is.
