Chapter 2 - Nathan’s Last Instruction

Clara kept the black phone hidden inside the lining of her suitcase.

She did not tell her family about the package.

For the next three days, the countdown continued without explanation. The device had no visible signal indicator, no contact list, and no access to ordinary settings. Each time Clara turned it on, the screen showed only the remaining hours.

At breakfast, Richard discussed selling Nathan’s apartment.

At lunch, Margaret suggested Clara place the baby for adoption.

She called it “considering every responsible option.”

At dinner, Julian asked whether Nathan had ever mentioned a company called Northstar Aeronautics.

The countdown continued.

Twelve hours.

Eight.

Three.

When only nine minutes remained, Clara locked herself inside the bathroom and sat on the closed lid of the toilet.

At zero, the screen went dark.

Then Nathan appeared.

The video had been recorded in a plain room. He wore civilian clothing and looked exhausted. There was a faint cut near his eyebrow, but his eyes were steady.

“Clara, if you’re watching this, I either failed to return or someone has convinced the world that I didn’t.”

She covered her mouth.

Nathan leaned closer to the camera.

“You are not seeing this because I expected to die. You are seeing it because I discovered a breach inside a defense program called Atlas Crown.”

Clara looked toward the locked door.

Outside, the house remained quiet.

“Atlas Crown was designed to protect military transport routes, intelligence channels, and field identities. Someone copied restricted operational records and sold access through private contractors. I found evidence that one of the leaks came from inside Meridian Shield Systems.”

Julian’s company.

Nathan continued.

“I could not report it through normal channels. Every report was redirected to the same oversight group. Every person who tried to investigate was transferred, discredited, or removed.”

His voice softened.

“You are going to hear things about me. Some will be true. I did hide part of my life from you. I told myself it was to protect you, but secrecy always has a cost.”

Clara pressed her hand against her stomach.

“I co-founded Meridian Shield before it became Meridian Shield. The original company was Mercer Strategic Technologies. I developed its navigation protection architecture with Dr. Samuel Voss. When military service made my public ownership impossible, the shares were moved into a protected trust.”

Clara stared at the screen.

Nathan had once told her that he had invested in a small technology project during college. She had assumed it had failed.

“You are the sole successor to my controlling interest.”

The bathroom seemed to tilt.

“That means Meridian belongs to you now. Not entirely. But enough to stop the people using it.”

Nathan held up a brass key identical to the one Clara had received.

“The key opens a secure deposit box registered under the name Evelyn Hart. Inside, you will find corporate documents, recordings, and the first part of the Atlas Crown evidence.”

He paused.

“Do not go alone. Contact Major Aaron Cole using the emergency number stored in the phone after this video ends. Trust him with your life.”

The image flickered.

Nathan’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Do not trust your father.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“Richard Hale was photographed meeting with a Meridian intermediary three months before the first records disappeared. I don’t know whether he understood what he was involved in. I only know his financial company processed payments connected to Atlas Crown.”

A floorboard creaked outside the bathroom.

Clara turned toward the door.

The handle moved once.

“Clara?” Julian called. “Are you all right?”

She lowered the phone volume.

Nathan’s video continued.

“There is one more thing. I was not originally assigned to the mission that took my aircraft over the Atlantic. The assignment changed the night before departure. Someone used my authorization credentials to approve the change.”

Julian tried the handle again.

“Clara?”

Nathan looked directly into the camera.

“If your father asks you to sign anything, refuse. If Julian Cross asks about Northstar, tell him you have never heard the name. And when Meridian’s board contacts you, do not accept their first offer.”

The video began to distort.

“I love you. I love our child. Whatever happens next, remember that the truth is not always inside the official report.”

The screen went black.

A telephone number appeared.

Julian knocked harder.

“Clara, open the door.”

She placed the phone inside her coat pocket, flushed the toilet, and opened the door.

Julian stood too close.

His gaze dropped immediately to her pocket.

“You were in there a long time.”

“I’m pregnant. It happens.”

He smiled, but his eyes remained cold.

“Did you hear something?”

“Like what?”

“A voice.”

“The house carries sound.”

Clara stepped around him.

As she passed, Julian caught her wrist.

The movement was not violent, but it was firm enough to reveal his intent.

“You should be careful,” he said quietly. “Stress can make people imagine things.”

Clara looked down at his hand.

He released her.

That night, after the house went dark, Clara used Nathan’s phone to contact Major Aaron Cole.

He answered after one ring.

“Mrs. Mercer?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Do not say anything else. Leave the house tomorrow at eleven. Walk to the pharmacy at the end of Hawthorne Avenue. Buy anything. Exit through the rear door.”

“How do I know I can trust you?”

“You don’t.”

The answer frightened her more than a promise would have.

Cole continued.

“But your husband once saved my entire team by disobeying a direct order. I have spent fourteen months trying to repay that debt.”

Clara heard paper moving on his side of the call.

“Did you receive the key?”

“Yes.”

“Then they know the succession protocol has activated.”

“Who are they?”

A long silence followed.

“Everyone who expected you to remain a grieving widow.”

The call ended.

Across the hallway, a thin line of light appeared beneath Julian and Vanessa’s bedroom door.

Clara stepped closer.

Julian was speaking in a low voice.

“The phone activated tonight,” he said.

Clara’s blood turned cold.

A second voice answered through his speaker.

“Then get the key before she meets the soldier.”
