Chapter 7 - GUARDIAN ONE

Pamela held no visible weapon.
Still, the two federal agents moved cautiously toward her from opposite aisles.
“Put your hands where we can see them,” one ordered.
Pamela raised her hands.
“I’m not here to fight.”
“You fled federal custody.”
“I was released after the investigators confirmed that Pamela Cross does not exist.”
Elena stared at her.
“What is your real name?”
“Rachel Vale.”
Brian had told the truth.
Pamela, or Rachel, looked toward the memorandum in Daniel’s hands.
“My father created the foundation with Thomas Carter.”
“And now you’re trying to steal it,” Elena said.
“I’m trying to prevent someone else from taking it.”
“You signed the fraudulent amendment.”
“Yes.”
“You helped Brian create a second identity.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to transfer seventy million dollars and disappear.”
Rachel shook her head.
“Brian planned to disappear. I planned to let him.”
The emergency lights cast pale shadows across her face.
“The Zurich account was never going to remain open,” she continued. “Brian would have arrived expecting money. Instead, he would have found financial investigators and a passport connected to multiple crimes.”
“You used him as a distraction.”
“I used his greed.”
Elena’s anger sharpened.
“You used my marriage.”
“Your marriage began as an operation.”
“Then you knew he approached me before our first date.”
“I selected you as his access point.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“You admit directing corporate espionage against Thomas Carter?”
“I was twenty-four years old and working for my father. I believed Hale Meridian had stolen assets from Marston.”
“Did it?”
“No. Thomas discovered that my father was secretly selling information to both sides.”
Elena thought of the instruction in the memorandum.
If Samuel Vale attempts to alter the succession structure, contact Guardian One.
“My father didn’t trust Samuel,” she said.
“He had good reason.”
“Where is Samuel?”
Rachel’s composure shifted for the first time.
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“He disappeared four years ago.”
“Before or after my father died?”
“Three months before.”
The federal agents reached Rachel.
One secured her hands while the other searched her.
She did not resist.
“I came for the memorandum because it contains the Guardian number,” she said.
Elena held up her phone.
“I already have it.”
Rachel’s eyes widened.
“Do not call it from your phone.”
“Why?”
“Because Guardian One is not a person.”
Before she could explain, the archive lights returned.
At the same moment, Elena’s phone began ringing.
The number on the screen matched the one in Thomas’s memorandum.
She had not called it.
The Guardian was calling her.
Everyone stared at the phone.
Rachel spoke urgently.
“Do not answer.”
Elena accepted the call.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a distorted voice said, “Elena Carter Hale, provide the confirmation phrase.”
“I don’t know a confirmation phrase.”
“Then the succession protocol has been compromised.”
“Who are you?”
“Where is the original memorandum?”
Elena looked at Daniel.
He shook his head.
“I asked who you are.”
The voice remained mechanical and calm.
“Guardian One is an automated security authority established by Thomas Carter. Its purpose is to protect the foundation from unauthorized succession.”
Rachel had been telling the truth.
“How did you know I found the memorandum?”
“The archive seal was broken.”
Elena glanced toward the opened envelope.
“What happens now?”
“Identity verification must be completed before midnight.”
“And if it isn’t?”
“Control of the foundation will transfer to the alternate beneficiary.”
“Who is the alternate beneficiary?”
The line went silent.
Then the voice answered.
“Samuel Vale.”
The call ended.
Daniel checked the time.
They had less than six hours.
Rachel was escorted upstairs but remained close enough to answer questions.
“The confirmation phrase was never written down,” she said. “Thomas believed you would know it.”
“My father and I had thousands of conversations.”
“It would be something no investigator could discover from records, interviews or surveillance.”
Elena tried to remember private phrases from childhood.
Her father had called her Ellie when she was young. He often said that preparation was a form of respect. On difficult days, he reminded her that storms revealed which structures had been built honestly.
Any of those could be the phrase.
They returned to the airport security office, where Brian remained detained.
Elena questioned him about Guardian One.
He had never heard of it.
Rachel was brought into the adjoining room.
The moment Brian saw her, his face filled with fury.
“You set me up.”
Rachel regarded him without emotion.
“You set yourself up ten years ago.”
“You said we were leaving together.”
“I said you would have a new life.”
Brian stood, but an officer ordered him back into his chair.
Rachel continued.
“You would have had a new life. It simply would have been one in which you answered questions from investigators.”
Brian looked at Elena.
“She planned everything.”
Elena met his gaze.
“She didn’t make you marry me.”
“Elena, I loved you.”
“You loved access.”
“That stopped being true.”
“When?”
Brian had no answer.
Daniel entered with another file.
“We have a larger problem. The emergency court order blocked the foundation from dividing the funds, but someone has filed an objection.”
“Samuel?” Elena asked.
“The objection was submitted by the alternate beneficiary’s legal representative.”
“Who?”
Daniel placed the filing on the table.
Elena read the name.
Marcus Carter.
