Chapter 4 - GATE 42

The dark sedan remained behind them for nearly twenty miles.
Brian appeared not to notice.
He answered emails, made two calls and spent several minutes reviewing documents on his tablet. Each time Elena looked toward him, he smiled reassuringly.
The sedan disappeared near the airport exit.
Elena memorized the last four numbers of its license plate.
Inside the terminal, Brian became unusually attentive.
He held her handbag while she removed her coat. He guided her through the priority security line and insisted they stay together.
At first, Elena believed he wanted to prevent her from contacting anyone.
Then she realized he was afraid of losing sight of her.
After security, Brian checked his phone.
“I need to speak with the airline desk about our connection.”
“What connection?”
“The Paris flight may be delayed.”
Elena glanced at the departure board.
Their supposed flight was scheduled on time.
“I’ll come with you.”
“No need. Go to the lounge. I’ll meet you there.”
He handed back her handbag.
Elena watched him walk away.
Instead of approaching the airline desk, Brian turned toward Gate 42.
Pamela was waiting beside the windows.
She wore the same red coat Elena had seen at the office.
Daniel had instructed Elena to remain in public spaces and collect whatever evidence she safely could.
She followed at a distance.
Brian and Pamela moved behind a decorative wall near an unused boarding area. Elena stopped several yards away and concealed herself behind a marble pillar.
She activated her phone’s recorder.
Pamela spoke first.
“And she still trusts you?”
“She already signed everything.”
The words confirmed what Elena had feared.
Brian’s next statement was worse.
“By tonight, she’ll lose every account.”
Elena recorded the rest.
The Zurich transfer.
The house as collateral.
The company shares moving through Northstar.
Their plan to leave before she understood what had happened.
Then her phone rang.
Brian’s name filled the screen.
He had called to discover where she was.
The sound revealed her hiding place.
By the time Brian rounded the pillar, Elena had reached Daniel and saved the recording.
Airport security intervened before Brian could take her phone.
Pamela attempted to walk away but was stopped near the moving walkway.
For several minutes, the confrontation unfolded in tense fragments.
Brian insisted it was a marital misunderstanding.
Pamela claimed she was discussing a legitimate acquisition.
Elena said little.
She forwarded the recording to Daniel, then uploaded it to a secure storage account.
A uniformed officer named Lewis separated them and asked Elena to explain what she had heard.
“My husband and Pamela Cross planned to transfer company assets into an account in Zurich,” Elena said. “They used fraudulent documents and a copied signature.”
Brian shook his head.
“That is not true. She misunderstood a confidential transaction.”
Officer Lewis looked at him.
“Then why did you say she would lose every account?”
“It was an expression.”
“What did you mean?”
Brian glanced toward Pamela.
Pamela said nothing.
Officer Lewis asked for their passports and boarding passes.
Brian handed over his American passport.
Elena knew the Maltese passport remained hidden inside his suitcase.
Their printed boarding passes listed Paris as the destination. However, Pamela carried a separate digital reservation for Zurich under another booking reference.
The officers escorted all three of them to a private interview room near the security offices.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later with a federal investigator and a representative from the trust’s custodian bank.
He placed a folder on the table.
“The transfer was initiated at twelve eighteen this afternoon,” he said.
Elena felt the room tilt.
“Was it completed?”
“No. We interrupted the first authorization stage.”
Brian leaned forward.
“This is a lawful company transfer.”
Daniel opened the folder.
“The authorization was supported by a fraudulent trust amendment and a fabricated video confirmation.”
“You cannot prove I created those materials.”
“I didn’t say you created them.”
Brian stopped speaking.
Daniel continued.
“The transfer request identifies Northstar Fiduciary Services as a temporary escrow provider. Northstar has no regulatory authorization to hold client escrow funds in any jurisdiction connected to this transaction.”
Pamela crossed her arms.
“That is incorrect.”
Daniel turned to her.
“You signed the compliance certification.”
“I relied on external counsel.”
“Name the counsel.”
Pamela hesitated.
The federal investigator, Agent Mara Vance, placed a printed image on the table.
It showed Brian’s Maltese passport.
Elena recognized the photograph she had taken.
“We located this in Mr. Hale’s checked suitcase,” Vance said. “The document appears genuine.”
Brian looked at Elena.
“You searched my luggage?”
“I found the identity you planned to use after you stole from me.”
Brian’s expression hardened.
“Everything I did was for the company.”
Daniel laughed once without humor.
“You created a second identity for the company?”
“I obtained residency for business reasons.”
“Under a different name?”
“There are legal explanations.”
Vance collected the documents.
“There may be. You’ll have the opportunity to provide them.”
The airport officers informed Brian and Pamela that they would be detained while the financial investigation continued.
Brian stood.
“This is unnecessary.”
Vance remained calm.
“Sit down.”
“This is my company.”
Elena finally spoke.
“No, Brian. It never was.”
His gaze moved toward her.
For the first time since the confrontation began, the confidence left his face completely.
He sat.
Elena believed the immediate danger had passed.
The accounts were frozen.
Brian and Pamela could not board their flight.
The recording existed in three secure locations.
Then Agent Vance’s phone rang.
She answered, listened and looked toward Daniel.
“What?” Elena asked.
Vance ended the call.
“The interrupted transfer was a decoy.”
Daniel opened his laptop.
“That’s impossible.”
Vance turned the screen toward Elena.
While everyone focused on the twenty-two-million-dollar Zurich request, another transaction had been initiated from a different subsidiary.
The amount was forty-eight million dollars.
The destination was not Northstar.
The destination account belonged to a charitable foundation created in Thomas Carter’s name.
Elena stared at the screen.
“My father never had a foundation.”
Daniel’s face had gone pale.
“I know.”

A new message appeared on Elena’s phone.
UNKNOWN NUMBER: Your husband stole what he could see. Someone else is taking what he never knew existed.
