Chapter 7 - the door beside the washing machine)

Andrew did not ask permission to stop the ceremony.
He simply walked away.
“Where was she last seen?”
Laura matched his pace.
“With Vanessa.”
Andrew turned.
“What?”
“She took Emily from the bridal room.”
“When?”
“Maybe fifteen minutes ago.”
Andrew scanned the venue.
“Vanessa.”
Laura caught his arm.
“Andrew.”
He looked at her.
She held up the phone.
“I found this.”
“What is it?”
“Later. Find Emily.”
Andrew nodded.
Military instinct took over.
He divided the area mentally.
Main garden.
Reception pavilion.
Preparation rooms.
Service hallway.
Parking area.
Restrooms.
He told the coordinator to check outside and ordered two cousins to search the reception building.
Then he entered the service hallway.
“Emily.”
Nothing.
He checked the first door.
Storage closet.
Second.
Kitchen access.
Third.
Locked.
Andrew stopped.
A faint sound came from behind it.
He leaned closer.
“Emily?”
Silence.
Then movement.
“Dad?”
Andrew’s entire body tightened.
“Emily.”
The handle would not turn.
“Back away from the door.”
He looked at the lock.
A simple exterior latch had been engaged.
Andrew opened it.
The door swung inward.
Emily sat on the floor beside a washing machine.
Her knees were pulled against her chest.
Tears covered her face.
Her flower basket lay sideways.
Andrew froze.
For one second he stopped being an officer.
Stopped being a groom.
Stopped being anything except a father who had failed to know his child was afraid.
Then Emily stood.
He dropped to his knees.
She ran into him.
“Dad.”
“I’m here.”
“She locked me in.”
Andrew’s hand moved protectively over the back of her head.
“Who?”
But he already knew.
Emily said it anyway.
“Vanessa.”
Andrew closed his eyes.
“Did she hurt you?”
Emily shook her head.
“Did you fall?”
“No.”
“Can you breathe okay?”
Emily nodded.
Andrew examined her hands.
Red marks from pulling the handle.
Nothing else visible.
He stood and lifted her.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily clung to his neck.
“I tried to tell you.”
The sentence nearly broke him.
“I know.”
“No.”
Emily shook her head against his shoulder.
“I tried before.”
Andrew stopped walking.
“What do you mean?”
Emily looked toward the hallway.
“She’s different when you leave.”
Andrew felt the floor disappear beneath him.
“How long?”
Emily began crying harder.
Andrew forced himself not to ask more.
Not there.
Not when she was already terrified.
“Okay.”
He kissed her hair.
“You don’t have to explain now.”
They walked toward the garden.
Guests had begun whispering.
The ceremony music stopped.
Vanessa stood near the arch.
When she saw Emily in Andrew’s arms, her expression changed for barely a second.
Andrew noticed.
Not relief.
Annoyance.
He put Emily down but kept an arm around her.
“Why was my daughter locked in that room?”
Vanessa glanced toward the guests.
“Can we do this privately?”
“No.”
“Andrew.”
“Why?”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“She was having a meltdown.”
Emily stared at her.
“I wasn’t.”
Vanessa ignored her.
“She said she didn’t want to walk.”
“That’s not true.”
“Emily.”
Andrew’s voice cut through them both.
He looked only at Vanessa.
“Did you lock the door?”
Vanessa hesitated.
The hesitation answered him.
“Did you?”
“She needed a minute.”
“You locked a child alone in a room.”
“She was disrupting everything.”
Andrew’s hand tightened around Emily’s shoulder.
“I asked why.”
Vanessa’s composure fractured.
“Because she ruins everything.”
The guests recoiled.
Emily leaned into her father.
And then came the whisper.
“She said after today, you wouldn’t need me anymore.”
Andrew turned toward Vanessa.
Vanessa finally understood she had lost control.
Then Laura stepped forward with the phone.
The next several minutes unfolded exactly as they would later be described in statements, family conversations, and one badly written local gossip post that Andrew immediately asked friends not to share.
He read the messages.
He saw the photographs.
He discovered Westbrook Academy.
He saw the conversation about Sarah’s house.
He canceled the wedding.
Vanessa accused him of choosing Emily.
He answered, “Every single time.”
Then Laura showed him Brooke’s message.
Did locking her up finally work?
Andrew looked toward the guests.
Brooke was leaving.
“Laura, stay with Emily.”
Andrew started after her.
Emily grabbed his sleeve.
“Dad.”
He stopped immediately.
Her face was terrified.
Not because Brooke was escaping.
Because Andrew was leaving.
The meaning struck him.
He crouched.
“I’m not leaving you.”
Brooke could go.
Vanessa could go.
The entire wedding could collapse.
Emily came first.
Andrew stayed.
Laura called venue security.
Brooke reached the parking area before two employees stopped her.
She did not resist.
When she returned, Vanessa stared at her with fury.
“You idiot.”
Brooke laughed once.
“Me?”
Andrew covered Emily’s ears before the argument escalated.
Then he looked at Laura.
“Take her inside.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Andrew looked down.
“I want to stay with you.”
He nodded.
“Then you stay with me.”
He turned back toward Vanessa.
“This conversation is over.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You owe me a chance to explain.”
“I owe my daughter an apology.”
“You’re going to throw away fourteen months because of one mistake?”
Andrew stared at her.
“One mistake?”
He held up the phone.
“How many messages are in here?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“How many photographs?”
Silence.
“How many times did she try to tell me something was wrong while you convinced her my happiness depended on her silence?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Andrew had guessed.
Emily had not yet told him everything.
But Vanessa’s expression confirmed it.
Andrew looked at Emily.
She stared at the ground.
His voice softened.
“Did she say that?”
Emily nodded.
Andrew closed his eyes.
Laura stepped closer to her brother.
“Andrew.”
He opened them.
There were tears now.
He did not hide them.
He turned to Emily.
“I need you to hear me.”
She looked up.
“No wedding, no relationship, no adult, nothing in my life is ever more important than you telling me when you’re scared.”
Emily’s lower lip trembled.
“I didn’t want you to be sad again.”
Andrew pulled her into his arms.
“That was never your job.”
Around them, the wedding guests became irrelevant.
Emily cried into his uniform.
Andrew held her.
And a few feet away, Vanessa finally saw the thing she had spent months trying to destroy.
Not Andrew’s grief.
Not Sarah’s memory.
Trust.
She had believed it made him weak.
Instead, it became the reason there was no path back to him.
But Andrew still did not know the full truth.
Laura had seen another folder on Vanessa’s phone.
A folder containing videos.
She did not open it in front of Emily.
May you like
She waited until later.
What she found would make the laundry room seem like only the final act of something much older.
