Chapter 14 - The House Beneath the House

Vale Station lay beneath the ruins of the family estate.
The Night Line entered a tunnel cut through the mountain and stopped on a platform of white stone. Arthur waited beside Miriam beneath the Vale crest.
He showed no surprise when both Vivians stepped from the train.
“Unexpected,” he said.
“No,” Vivian replied. “Only unwanted.”
Arthur looked at Vivian B.
“You failed.”
She flinched.
Vivian stepped in front of her.
“She chose.”
“Choice is simply conditioning we have not fully measured.”
Miriam’s hands were bound, but she stood upright.
“Still repeating the same excuse, Arthur?”
He glanced at her.
“You have become sentimental in old age.”
“I became honest.”
Arthur turned toward Elena.
“My daughter.”
“You are not my father.”
“Biology disagrees.”
“Fatherhood requires more than blood.”
Vivian almost looked at Elena.
The words belonged to both of them.
Arthur led them through a steel doorway into the foundation beneath the demolished estate. Entire rooms had been preserved underground: a library, a dining hall, offices, bedrooms, and a courtroom-like chamber.
Portraits of Vale ancestors lined the walls.
In every painting, the faces had been subtly altered.
Different eyes.
Different jawlines.
Replacement heirs hidden inside family history.
Arthur entered the courtroom chamber.
At its center stood two biometric platforms.
“Vivian and her replica will stand there.”
“No,” Vivian said.
Arthur smiled.
“You came for Miriam. Her release requires succession verification.”
“You already attempted succession.”
“You accepted Curator status, then abused transitional authority. The covenant now requires identity confirmation.”
“By killing one of us.”
“By determining continuity.”
Vivian B looked toward the platform.
“What happens to the one rejected?”
Arthur did not answer.
She turned pale.
“You said she would be given a new identity.”
“She has already consumed considerable resources.”
Vivian B’s fear changed into hatred.
“I called you Father.”
“You were instructed to.”
Arthur motioned toward guards positioned along the walls.
“Stand on the platforms.”
Vivian assessed the room.
Elise’s team had boarded the main train after reconnecting the cars, but they had disappeared during the final tunnel. Either captured or moving through another route.
Adrian stood close behind Vivian.
Elena remained beside Miriam.
They needed time.
Vivian stepped onto the first platform.
Vivian B took the second.
Scanners activated.
The wall displayed their matched genetic profiles, fingerprints, facial structures, voices, and learned histories.
IDENTITY CONFLICT.
PRIMARY AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.
Arthur inserted a black card into the console.
“Each of you will answer seven questions. The system will determine which response pattern aligns with the original Vivian Vale.”
The first question appeared.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY?
Vivian B answered first.
“A blue blanket, a woman singing, and smoke above a doorway.”
Vivian had dreamed of the same scene for years.
She answered honestly.
“I don’t know whether my earliest memory is mine or something I was told.”
The system recorded both.
Second question.
WHO IS YOUR MOTHER?
Vivian B looked at Elena.
“Elena Vale.”
Vivian answered, “The woman who gave birth to me is Elena. The woman who raised me is Lorraine. Neither relationship can be reduced to one word.”
Arthur frowned.
Third question.
WHY DID YOU FREEZE THE HART ACCOUNTS?
Vivian B replied, “Because they abused me and violated the trust agreement.”
Vivian said, “Because I wanted them to feel powerless.”
Elena looked at her.
Vivian continued.
“I also needed to prevent asset concealment. Both things were true.”
Fourth question.
DID YOU LOVE ADRIAN CROSS?
Vivian B said, “Yes.”
Vivian looked at Adrian.
“Yes. And that does not excuse what he did.”
Fifth question.
WHAT DO YOU FEAR MOST?
Vivian B answered, “Being erased.”
Vivian answered, “Becoming someone who erases others.”
The system paused.
Arthur’s confidence weakened.
Sixth question.
WHO ARE YOU?
Vivian B began reciting.
“Vivian Eleanor Vale, born September 14, beneficiary of the Vale Meridian Trust.”
She stopped.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she said, “I don’t know.”
Vivian looked at the screen.
“I am the person choosing my next action.”
The seventh question appeared.
WHICH LIFE SHOULD CONTINUE?
Arthur watched them closely.
Vivian B whispered, “Mine.”
Vivian looked at her.
Then she faced the scanner.
“Both.”
The system flashed red.
INVALID RESPONSE.
“Both,” Vivian repeated.
Arthur approached the console.
“That is not permitted.”
“Then your system cannot determine identity. It can only enforce scarcity.”
“Answer correctly.”
“Both.”
The guards raised their weapons.
Vivian B stepped off her platform.
Alarms sounded.
IDENTITY VERIFICATION INTERRUPTED.
Arthur struck the console.
“Return to position.”
“No,” Vivian B said.
For the first time, her voice did not sound like Vivian’s.
It sounded like her own.
Arthur drew a pistol.
Adrian moved, but a guard struck him to the floor.
Arthur aimed at Vivian B.
“You were designed for obedience.”
Miriam laughed.
Arthur looked toward her.
“You find this amusing?”
“You spent a lifetime proving identity could be manufactured,” Miriam said. “Then you built two women strong enough to reject the manufacturer.”
The courtroom doors exploded inward.
Elise entered with her team.
Gunfire erupted.
Vivian pulled Vivian B behind the biometric platforms. Elena dragged Miriam toward cover. Adrian tackled one of the guards.
Arthur retreated through a side door.
Vivian followed.
He entered a private office filled with old ledgers.
At the far wall stood a furnace.
Arthur began throwing files into the flames.
Vivian aimed the recovered pistol at him.
“Stop.”
He turned slowly.
“You will not shoot me.”
“Why?”
“Because you need answers.”
“Everyone has used that promise to keep me obedient.”
“You still need to know who Eleanor Wren is.”
Vivian’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Arthur smiled.
“You think it is Evelyn, my sister. You think the first child survived and became Meridian’s hidden auditor.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Arthur opened a drawer.
Inside was a photograph of Lorraine Hart holding a newborn.
On the back, someone had written:
ELEANOR WREN WITH M-7.
Vivian stared at it.
“That’s Lorraine.”
May you like
Arthur’s smile widened.
“Lorraine was the Wren.”
