Chapter 10 - The Grave With Her Name

The grave stood in a private cemetery outside Bellweather.

VIVIAN ELEANOR VALE.

SEPTEMBER 14.

SEPTEMBER 18.

BELOVED DAUGHTER.

The stone had weathered, but the dates remained clear.

Vivian stared at the four-day life engraved beneath her name.

Elena stood several feet away, trembling.

“This is where Malcolm brought you?”

“Yes.”

“He showed you a body?”

“A small coffin. He would not let me open it.”

“And you believed him.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I had been running for days. Miriam was missing. The courthouse had burned. Malcolm had documents signed by a doctor I trusted.”

Vivian looked toward the black sedan parked near the cemetery gate.

Elise waited inside with a tactical team. Federal agents had objected to Vivian meeting Adrian, but Vivian no longer trusted federal authority enough to reveal every detail.

Meridian’s files contained too many government names.

Adrian appeared between the trees.

He wore a dark jacket and held both hands where they could be seen.

Vivian’s body remembered him before her mind allowed it.

The familiar stride.

The tilt of his head.

The crease between his eyebrows when he was afraid.

For years, she had wondered whether she would hate him or run toward him.

She did neither.

He stopped beside the grave.

“You look well.”

“You look alive.”

“I wasn’t sure I would be for much longer.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Where is Miriam?”

Adrian glanced toward the parked sedan.

“If they’re listening, we have minutes.”

“Where is she?” Vivian repeated.

“She was taken from the medical facility by people carrying federal credentials.”

“Peter?”

“The man you call Peter.”

“Who is he?”

Adrian looked at the grave.

“Arthur Vale.”

Elena staggered backward.

“No.”

Vivian stared at Adrian.

“My grandfather is dead.”

“So was your mother. So was Miriam. Death certificates are not persuasive evidence in this family.”

Elena grabbed Adrian’s jacket.

“My father died in front of me.”

“You saw a body after an explosion.”

“I held his hand.”

“You held the hand of a man whose face had been burned beyond recognition.”

Elena released him.

Adrian continued.

“Arthur built the ledger. He diverted Meridian’s assets. He created the beneficiary lock. But he did not do it to destroy the organization.”

Vivian understood before he finished.

“He wanted to take control.”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“My father hated Meridian.”

“He hated serving beneath its founders. He believed it should belong to the Vale family.”

Vivian remembered Peter standing in the underground chamber, asking her to inherit what was always intended for her.

“Why use Peter Dorsey’s identity?”

“Because Peter was his banker and one of the first people to discover Arthur survived. Arthur killed him and assumed his access.”

Elena turned away, struggling to breathe.

Vivian remained focused on Adrian.

“How do you know this?”

“Because I worked for Arthur.”

“You worked for Meridian.”

“I thought they were the same.”

“Do not hide behind technical distinctions.”

“I’m not.”

“Did you love me?”

The question escaped before Vivian could stop it.

Adrian’s face changed.

“At first, you were an assignment.”

“And later?”

“Later, you were the reason I failed it.”

“You obtained information about my trust.”

“I gave Arthur false reports.”

“The video showed you discussing marriage.”

“I had already decided to take you away.”

“You proposed because he ordered you to.”

“I proposed earlier than he ordered me to.”

Vivian laughed once.

“You expect that to comfort me?”

“No.”

“Why did you leave?”

“Malcolm discovered I was lying to Arthur. He threatened to tell you everything unless I disappeared.”

“You obeyed my father?”

“He also had photographs of you entering your office, leaving your apartment, walking through parking garages. Arthur’s people were close. Malcolm promised he could keep you hidden if I went.”

“Malcolm never protected me.”

“I know that now.”

“You could have warned me.”

“Yes.”

“You could have trusted me.”

“Yes.”

“You chose for me like everyone else.”

Adrian lowered his gaze.

“Yes.”

That answer hurt more than an excuse would have.

Elise approached from the car.

“We confirmed an unauthorized extraction from Miriam’s medical unit. Security footage was replaced with a loop.”

Vivian looked at Adrian.

“Where did Arthur take her?”

“The original Vale estate.”

Elena turned.

“That house was demolished.”

“The house was. The foundation wasn’t.”

Adrian removed a small device from his pocket.

“This contains access codes. Arthur believes Miriam knows how to reverse the restitution transfers.”

“Does she?”

“No. You are the only one who can.”

“Then he will come for me.”

“He already has.”

Adrian pointed toward the grave.

Vivian looked down.

A red light blinked between two stones.

Elise shouted for everyone to move.

The explosion tore open the earth.

Vivian hit the ground as dirt and fragments of stone filled the air. The tactical team rushed forward.

The grave bearing Vivian’s name collapsed inward.

Beneath it was not a coffin.

A steel chamber had been hidden under the soil.

Inside sat a monitor and a single white telephone.

The telephone began ringing.

Vivian descended into the chamber before Elise could stop her.

She answered.

Arthur Vale’s voice greeted her.

“You always did prefer digging up the truth.”

“Where is Miriam?”

“Safe for the moment.”

“What do you want?”

“To correct your mistake.”

“You mean the money I took from you.”

“I mean the chaos you released.”

“You created Meridian’s ledger.”

“I created order from corruption.”

“You replaced children.”

“I preserved institutions.”

“You turned families into prisons.”

“Families have always been prisons. I simply selected the wardens.”

Vivian tightened her grip on the telephone.

“You selected Malcolm.”

“No. Elena did.”

Elena heard him through the speaker.

Her face crumpled.

Arthur continued.

“But I recognized his potential. Greed is predictable. Love is not.”

“Release Miriam.”

“Come to the Vale estate.”

“So you can force me to reverse the transfers?”

“No force.”

May you like

His voice softened.

“You will reverse them voluntarily when you learn who received the money.”
