Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Safe)

The confession was four pages long.
Malcolm Reed admitted helping Beatrice move money from the Langley trust.
He admitted creating shell companies.
He admitted arranging the fraudulent paternity report.
And he admitted receiving hospital credentials from Aaron Voss.
But when Ethan reached the section about Olivia, the wording changed.
Beatrice believed Olivia intended to expose us. She demanded that I help create a medical event that would delay Olivia long enough for us to recover the financial records she had copied.
Ethan stopped reading.
"A medical event?"
Rebecca sat across from him in the conference room at Seabrook.
"Keep going."
Ethan did.
Malcolm claimed Beatrice never explicitly ordered Olivia's death.
The plan, according to him, had been to create a complication that would postpone the surgery and keep Olivia hospitalized for several days.
During that time, Malcolm would search Ethan and Olivia's home for evidence.
Instead, the altered medication caused a catastrophic emergency.
Malcolm wrote that Beatrice panicked.
Then she did something worse.
She destroyed the messages connecting her to the chart manipulation.
Malcolm kept copies.
He began blackmailing her.
That explained the trust withdrawals after Olivia's death.
Beatrice had not simply stolen from Charles.
She had been paying Malcolm.
Ethan turned the page.
The final paragraph concerned Charles.
Charles Langley discovered the truth. I met him at Seabrook and gave him copies of financial records and messages. Charles told me he would protect Noah first and expose Beatrice second. I believed he planned to contact authorities after changing the trust.
Ethan looked up.
"My father died two weeks later."
Rebecca nodded.
"From cancer."
"That's what we were told."
Rebecca's expression hardened.
"Do not do this to yourself."
"I need to know."
Charles had been receiving hospice care at home.
His death had not seemed suspicious.
But neither had Olivia's.
Ethan read the final line.
If Charles dies before he reports what I told him, look closely at his final forty eight hours.
Signed Malcolm Reed.
Ethan stood.
"Where was this safe?"
"Behind the panel in Charles's dressing room."
"Who knew the combination?"
"You."
"My mother?"
"Probably."
Ethan called Nora.
She came in immediately.
"Who was with my father during his last two days?"
Nora thought.
"Me. Beatrice. The hospice nurse. You came the afternoon before he died."
"Anyone else?"
"Malcolm."
Ethan froze.
"Malcolm Reed came here?"
"Late at night."
"When?"
"The night before Charles died."
"Why didn't you ever tell me?"
"I thought your father called him."
Ethan paced.
"Who gave Dad his medication?"
"Usually the nurse."
"Usually?"
Nora looked uncomfortable.
"The final night, your mother sent the nurse home early."
Rebecca stood.
"Why?"
"She said Charles wanted privacy."
"Did he?"
Nora shook her head.
"I don't know."
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
His father had died in the bedroom directly above them.
Two deaths.
One family.
One woman at the center of both.
Detective Mara Quinn arrived an hour later.
She had already reviewed the staircase security footage.
"We have enough to charge Beatrice with assault and child endangerment based on the video and witness statements."
Ethan looked at her.
"What about Olivia?"
"That investigation is reopening."
"And my father?"
"We need evidence."
Ethan handed her Malcolm's confession.
Mara read several paragraphs.
"Where is Reed?"
"No one knows."
"Then finding him becomes important."
Aaron Voss entered protective custody that afternoon.
Police searched Malcolm's former properties.
Nothing.
By evening, Beatrice had been released on bail pending further charges.
Ethan was furious.
"She comes back here, she's trespassing."
Rebecca nodded.
"Legally, Seabrook is controlled by Noah's trust. As trustee, you can exclude her."
Ethan looked at the trust certificate.
His father's plan suddenly made sense.
Charles had not given Noah a mansion.
He had built a fortress around him.
At nine fourteen that night, Ethan's phone vibrated.
A text from an unknown number.
You want Malcolm Reed?
Come alone to Harbor Pier 6 at midnight.
Bring Olivia's flash drive.
Ethan stared at the message.
A second one arrived.
Your mother has been lying to you.
May you like
Malcolm didn't disappear.
She has known exactly where he is.
