Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Photograph

Madison waited until morning.
She did not accuse Evelyn.
Not yet.
Instead, she asked Ethan about the notebook.
He refused to speak.
So Madison began searching.
Not the house.
The records.
The Carter family had kept financial documents for decades.
She went to the basement archive.
There were boxes labeled by year.
She searched through them until she found the original trust agreement.
The first pages were normal.
Property.
Investments.
Beneficiaries.
Then she reached the amendment.
Her grandfather's signature appeared at the bottom.
Richard's signature appeared beneath it.
Then a third signature.
Madison stared.
The name was almost completely faded.
She took a photograph.
Before she could examine it, footsteps approached.
She turned.
Evelyn stood at the basement entrance.
You should not be down here.
Madison closed the folder.
Why?
Because some documents are private.
Private from me?
From everyone.
Evelyn walked closer.
Madison showed her the page.
Who is that?
Evelyn's face went pale.
I do not know.
You are lying.
Evelyn stepped back.
You have no idea what happened here.
Then tell me.
Evelyn looked at the signature.
For years, I tried to forget.
Forget what?
A sound came from upstairs.
The front door.
Evelyn immediately closed the folder.
We have to go.
Who is here?
She did not answer.
Madison followed her upstairs.
A black sedan was parked outside.
Bradley Collins entered the house.
He carried a leather case.
He looked at Madison.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at the basement door.
We need to talk.
Madison crossed her arms.
About the trust?
Bradley smiled.
About your father's future.
What about Ethan?
Bradley's smile disappeared.
Ethan is not part of this conversation.
He is the entire reason for it.
Bradley stepped closer.
You should leave this alone.
Madison stared at him.
That sounds familiar.
Bradley lowered his voice.
Your father is trying to protect this family.
From what?
Bradley looked toward the stairs.
From the consequences of your grandfather's final decision.
Madison's pulse quickened.
What final decision?
Bradley opened his case.
Before he could answer, Ethan appeared at the top of the staircase.
He looked directly at Bradley.
Then he whispered:
You're the man from the car.
Bradley froze.
Madison turned.
What man?
Ethan's face drained of color.
Bradley closed the case.
Nobody moved.
Then Evelyn said something that changed everything.
Madison.
May you like
Your grandfather did not leave Ethan the trust.
He left him a warning.
