THE PACKET IN THE COURTROOM / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Return

Three days earlier, Madison Carter had been sitting inside a military transport plane crossing the Atlantic.

She had spent eleven months away from home.

Eleven months of long missions, sleepless nights, classified briefings, and conversations that ended with the same sentence.

We cannot discuss that.

She had learned to live with silence.

But she had never learned to live with the silence of her family.

Her father had called only twice.

Her mother had sent messages that became increasingly formal.

Ethan had stopped answering almost completely.

That was what bothered her most.

When Madison had left home, Ethan had been thirteen.

He had followed her to the driveway carrying a backpack nearly as large as his body.

Do not forget me, he had said.

She had laughed and promised she never would.

Then she had left.

Now, eleven months later, the boy she remembered sounded different on the phone.

Quiet.

Careful.

Always checking whether someone was nearby before speaking.

Two weeks before Madison's return, Ethan had finally called.

He did not say hello.

He simply whispered, Are you coming home?

Madison had sat up immediately.

What happened?

Nothing.

Ethan?

Silence.

Then he said, Dad says you should not come.

Madison stared through the aircraft window.

Why?

Another silence.

Because if you come home, everything changes.

The call ended.

Madison had tried calling back.

No answer.

She contacted her mother.

Evelyn replied within minutes.

Ethan is stressed. Your father is handling some complicated family matters. Please do not make things harder.

That sentence stayed with Madison.

Make things harder.

She had spent the next two weeks trying to understand what it meant.

Then the message arrived.

Your father has filed a petition regarding control of the Carter family trust.

Madison knew the Carter trust was complicated.

Her grandfather had created it decades earlier.

But the trust was not supposed to be transferred until Ethan turned twenty five.

There was one exception.

If Richard Carter could prove that Ethan was incapable of managing the family interests, temporary control could be transferred.

Madison immediately called home.

Richard answered.

You do not need to involve yourself in this.

It concerns Ethan.

It concerns the family.

Then why is Ethan afraid?

Silence.

Madison heard something in the background.

A chair moving.

A door closing.

Someone whispered, Dad.

Richard's voice became cold.

Stay out of this.

The call ended.

Madison booked the first flight home.

She arrived without telling them.

But before she went to the house, she made one stop.

The military legal office.

She showed an officer the documents she had received.

The officer read them.

Then he looked at her.

Madison, where did you get this?

My father.

The officer's expression hardened.

You need to understand something.

What?

This document carries a designation that should not be appearing in a civilian inheritance dispute.

Madison felt her stomach tighten.

What does that mean?

It means someone has mixed two worlds that should never have been mixed.

He returned the document.

And if I were you, I would not walk into that courtroom without knowing why.

Madison thanked him.

She walked outside.

For the first time, she wondered whether coming home had been a mistake.

Then she remembered Ethan's voice.

Because if you come home, everything changes.

Madison looked toward the city skyline.

She had spent her entire adult life learning how to walk toward danger.

This time, the danger had her family's name on it.
