Chapter 6 - The Key in the Flower Arrangement

Maya returned to the hotel that evening despite being suspended.

She entered through the staff loading dock wearing ordinary clothes and found Isabella in the empty ballroom.

“I know where Adrian keeps the office key,” Maya said.

“His office uses an electronic lock.”

“The main door does. His desk has a separate key.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve seen him hide it.”

“Where?”

“In the lobby flower arrangement.”

Isabella stared at her.

“Why would he keep it there?”

“He doesn’t trust Brent, and he doesn’t want the key in his pocket when he goes through security at private events.”

They waited until Adrian, Brent, and Celeste entered the hotel restaurant for dinner.

The lobby remained busy with guests, but no one paid attention as Maya approached the enormous arrangement of white roses near the staircase. She pretended to adjust a fallen flower, reached beneath the base, and removed a small brass key taped inside a plastic sleeve.

Marcus met them near Adrian’s office.

“I need to say this clearly,” he warned. “Entering the manager’s desk without authorization could compromise the investigation.”

“I own the desk,” Isabella replied.

“Not under the identity you’re currently using.”

“Then consider this a formal instruction from the majority owner of Vale Hospitality Group.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

The key nearly slipped from her fingers.

“You’re who?”

Isabella turned toward her.

“My full name is Isabella Vale.”

Maya stared at her in stunned silence.

“I came here to investigate before the board could prepare a performance. Only Marcus knew.”

Maya looked back toward the lobby.

“Adrian called you trash.”

“Yes.”

“He canceled your reservation.”

“Yes.”

“He threatened you.”

“Yes.”

“And you let him?”

“I needed to know what happened to employees who had no power to stop him.”

Maya’s expression shifted from shock to something close to anger.

“You could have ended it the moment you arrived.”

“I could have fired one man. I needed evidence to remove everyone protecting him.”

Marcus unlocked the office using his security authority. Isabella used the brass key on the desk drawer.

Inside were two storage devices, several blank access cards, a stack of invoices, and a black notebook containing handwritten percentages.

Maya picked up one invoice.

“This vendor does not exist.”

“How do you know?” Isabella asked.

“The address belongs to a parking garage.”

Marcus photographed every page before placing the documents into evidence bags.

One storage device was encrypted. The other contained spreadsheets showing payments divided between Adrian, Celeste, and Brent.

There were also employee files.

Each file contained private information, disciplinary records, family details, debts, immigration status, and medical expenses. Notes in Adrian’s handwriting explained how each person could be pressured.

Rosa: Daughter’s scholarship.

Maya: Mother’s medication.

Luis: Brother’s legal status.

Jamal: Prior arrest, charges dismissed.

Henry: Retirement benefits.

Natalie: Housing provided by hotel partner.

Isabella felt physically sick.

“He didn’t manage employees,” she said. “He collected weaknesses.”

Maya read her own file.

Her face went pale.

“He knows which pharmacy my mother uses.”

Isabella took the page from her.

“He will never use this information against you again.”

A sound came from the hallway.

The office door handle moved.

Marcus quickly shut the drawer, but there was no time to leave.

Adrian entered with Celeste and Brent.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Adrian looked at the open desk drawer.

Then at the key in Isabella’s hand.

“What are you doing?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Conducting a security review.”

“Without my permission?”

“I do not need your permission when company property may be at risk.”

Adrian turned toward Isabella.

“You stole my key.”

“Your key was hidden in company property.”

Celeste moved to the desk and saw the evidence bags.

“You cannot remove those documents.”

Marcus held up his phone.

“They have already been copied and transferred.”

Brent lunged toward the storage device, but two security officers entered and blocked him.

Adrian’s face twisted with rage.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

“I know exactly what you’ve done,” Isabella said.

“Do you?” He stepped closer. “You think those employees are innocent victims? They would steal the hotel piece by piece if I didn’t control them.”

“You stole from the hotel.”

“I built its reputation.”

“You built fear.”

“I made this property profitable.”

“With fake invoices and unpaid wages.”

Celeste spoke quickly.

“This conversation is finished. Ms. Hart, you will be removed tonight. Marcus, you are suspended pending a corporate review.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“A review conducted by whom?”

“Regional finance.”

“The department receiving payments from Apex Mechanical?”

Celeste froze.

Adrian looked at her.

He had not known Marcus had traced the money.

Brent moved toward the side door, but an officer stopped him.

Adrian pointed at Isabella.

“Get her out of this hotel.”

Marcus did not move.

“Your authority has been temporarily restricted due to evidence of financial misconduct.”

“Restricted by whom?”

Isabella answered.

“By me.”

Adrian stared at her.

For one dangerous second, she thought he had finally understood.

Then Celeste laughed.

“You are a guest in a discounted room. Stop pretending you matter.”

May you like

Isabella slipped the brass key onto the desk.

“Tomorrow morning, I won’t have to pretend.”
