THE OWNER’S DAUGHTER / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Partner Behind the Numbers

The regional finance director arrived shortly after noon.

Her name was Celeste Warren, a polished woman in her early fifties who had worked for Vale Hospitality Group for eighteen years. She wore a navy suit, carried an expensive leather folder, and greeted Adrian with a familiarity that immediately caught Isabella’s attention.

Celeste was also one of the board members who had defended Adrian’s financial results.

Isabella watched from the lobby café as the two entered Adrian’s office.

Marcus joined her several minutes later.

“Celeste’s car entered the underground garage,” he said.

“She wasn’t scheduled to visit.”

“Someone warned her.”

“Can we access the office audio?”

“Not legally without consent or a warrant.”

“What about the corridor camera?”

“That is ours.”

On Marcus’s tablet, they watched Celeste hand Adrian a small storage device. Brent stood beside the door while Adrian placed it inside a desk drawer.

“What could be on it?” Isabella asked.

“Financial records. Employee information. Copies of deleted footage.”

“Or instructions for what to destroy.”

Marcus locked the screen.

“We have enough to call law enforcement.”

“We have signs of fraud, but Adrian will claim the vendors performed legitimate work. Celeste will say the payments were approved according to procedure.”

“Then we need the vendor owner.”

Isabella remembered the unmarked van at the loading dock.

“Cross Hospitality Consulting belongs to Adrian. What about Apex Mechanical?”

Marcus opened a report.

“Apex is registered through a holding company. The listed director died four years ago.”

“Who receives the payments?”

“The money moves through several accounts before reaching a private trust.”

“Whose trust?”

“We don’t know yet.”

A hotel housekeeper approached their table. She looked terrified.

“Ms. Hart?”

“Yes?”

“Rosa has been taken to the manager’s office.”

“Why?”

“They searched her locker and found guest jewelry.”

Isabella stood immediately.

“It was planted.”

“I know. We all know.”

Marcus called two members of his security team and headed toward the office.

Adrian had gathered several employees in the corridor. Rosa stood between Brent and a security guard. An open bag rested on the desk, containing a diamond bracelet.

Celeste watched from a chair near the window.

Adrian held up the bracelet.

“This was reported missing from the presidential suite.”

“I have never entered that suite,” Rosa said.

“Housekeeping records show your access card was used.”

“I was assigned to the fourth floor.”

Adrian looked at the employees around him.

“This is what happens when standards are ignored.”

Isabella entered.

“Check the camera footage.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“The relevant camera was unfortunately offline.”

“Convenient.”

Celeste stood.

“And you are?”

“Isabella Hart. A guest.”

Celeste looked her over, showing no sign of recognition.

“Then you should return to the public areas.”

“An employee is being falsely accused.”

“That is a serious allegation.”

“So is theft.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“The bracelet was found in Rosa’s locker.”

“Who searched it?”

“Brent.”

“Who witnessed him opening it?”

Silence.

“Who had access before the search?”

“That information is confidential.”

Rosa began crying quietly.

“I have worked here for fourteen years.”

Adrian’s voice remained cold.

“And betrayed the trust of this hotel.”

Marcus entered with his officers.

“Rosa is not leaving with anyone until my team reviews the evidence.”

Adrian stared at him.

“I am ordering you to contact the police.”

“I will. I’ll also inform them that the access-control database was altered this morning.”

Celeste’s expression changed slightly.

Marcus continued.

“Rosa’s card was registered as entering the presidential suite at 9:14. At that exact time, she appears on a kitchen camera delivering linen to the second floor.”

Employees whispered.

Adrian looked toward Brent.

“The system may have recorded the wrong card.”

“The system did not make a mistake,” Marcus said. “Someone copied her access credentials.”

Brent took a step backward.

Isabella noticed.

“So the bracelet was planted,” she said.

Adrian pointed toward the door.

“Everyone out.”

“No,” Isabella replied.

“This is a private investigation.”

“You made it public when you gathered the staff to humiliate her.”

Celeste closed her folder.

“Mr. Cross, perhaps we should postpone disciplinary action until security completes its review.”

Adrian looked at her in disbelief.

She was already protecting herself.

Rosa was released and escorted downstairs by her coworkers.

As the corridor emptied, Isabella turned toward Celeste.

“You arrived quickly for an unscheduled visit.”

Celeste smiled.

“I supervise regional finances. Problems at this property concern me.”

“Do deleted surveillance files concern you?”

“I don’t know what you’re suggesting.”

“I think you do.”

Celeste’s smile faded.

“Young woman, hotels often attract guests who imagine themselves more important than they are.”

Isabella held her gaze.

“That must be difficult for you.”

Celeste walked away without answering.

Marcus waited until she disappeared into the elevator.

“My team identified the private trust receiving funds from Apex Mechanical.”

“Whose name is attached?”

“Celeste Warren’s daughter.”

The final piece was visible now.

Adrian controlled operations. Celeste protected the financial records. Together, they created fake vendors, billed the hotel for nonexistent repairs, stole supplies, and punished anyone who questioned them.

But Isabella still needed proof that connected them directly.

That proof was locked inside Adrian’s desk.
