THE ORDER SHE NEVER GAVE / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - the man wearing jonathan’s watch

Margaret stared at the photograph until the screen dimmed.

Olivia climbed down from the roof and joined her.

“What happened?”

Margaret locked the phone.

“Nothing we can confirm.”

“Mom.”

The single word carried a demand for honesty.

Margaret reopened the image.

Olivia looked at Diane, then at the man in the dark coat.

Her eyes moved to the watch.

“No.”

“We don’t know who he is.”

“That was Dad’s.”

“It could have been taken after the crash.”

“The watch was never recovered.”

“Neither was much of the wreckage.”

Olivia enlarged the photograph.

The man’s left hand rested on the chair.

A pale scar crossed his smallest finger.

Jonathan had received the same scar while repairing Olivia’s bicycle when she was seven.

Olivia’s breathing changed.

“That is him.”

Margaret wanted to deny it.

Instead, she contacted Beck.

“Do not approach the clinic.”

“We already have a surveillance team in position.”

“Withdraw them.”

“General?”

“If that man is Jonathan, we don’t know whether he is a prisoner, an ally, or part of Aster.”

Beck lowered his voice.

“There’s another problem. The clinic records list him under the name David Mercer.”

“Background?”

“Former intelligence contractor. Officially dead for fourteen years.”

Margaret looked at the horizon.

“Who registered him at the clinic?”

“The record was created under your authorization.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Again.

Someone was still using her credentials.

“Send me everything.”

A file arrived containing the clinic’s security footage.

Margaret, Olivia, and Noah watched it inside the farmhouse study.

Diane entered the clinic at 4:12 p.m.

The man arrived seven minutes later.

They did not greet one another like strangers.

Diane sat beside him.

For eleven minutes, they spoke too quietly for the camera to record.

Then the man handed her a sealed envelope.

Before leaving, he turned toward the security camera.

The image captured his face.

Olivia stopped breathing.

The man was older. His hair had turned silver, and the years had changed the shape of his face.

But he was Jonathan Vale.

Margaret stepped away from the screen.

Noah whispered, “That’s impossible.”

Olivia looked at him.

“You knew my father better than anyone.”

“I watched his helicopter burn.”

“Did you see his body?”

Noah did not answer.

The study doorbell rang.

Margaret reached for the security monitor.

A delivery driver stood outside holding a small wooden box.

“No one comes onto this property without clearance,” she said.

Noah checked the perimeter system.

“The cameras did not record a vehicle entering.”

Margaret ordered the driver to place the box on the ground and leave.

He obeyed.

The box was examined before being brought inside.

It contained no explosives or tracking devices.

Olivia opened it.

Inside was a compass, a keycard, and a cassette tape.

The compass belonged to Jonathan.

The keycard carried the symbol of Aster Command.

Margaret placed the cassette into an old player.

Jonathan’s voice emerged through the static.

“Maggie, if Olivia has received this, then Diane failed to secure the child.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“You will believe I betrayed you. In some ways, I did. But Northbridge was never a mission I discovered.”

Margaret leaned closer.

“It was a mission I helped create.”

Noah stepped backward.

Jonathan’s voice remained calm.

“Aster did not begin with Adrian Cole. He inherited it from someone else. Someone whose identity I protected because revealing it would have destroyed Olivia’s future.”

Margaret looked at her daughter.

The tape clicked.

A second voice began speaking.

It belonged to Diane.

“The succession protocol is active. Olivia’s child is now recognized.”

Olivia pressed both hands against her stomach.

“That’s impossible. The baby hasn’t been born.”

Noah examined the Aster keycard.

“The trust may not require birth.”

“What else could activate it?” Margaret asked.

Noah’s face lost all color.

“A confirmed heartbeat.”

Every computer in the study turned on at once.

The Aster symbol appeared across the screens.

A countdown began.

23:59:59.

23:59:58.

23:59:57.

Margaret reached for the power controls.

Nothing responded.

A message appeared beneath the countdown.

SUCCESSOR IDENTIFIED.

Olivia Vale Cross.

Olivia stared at her own name.

Then the text changed.

TRANSFER REQUIRES FINAL AUTHORIZATION FROM THE FOUNDER.

The security camera outside the farmhouse activated.

A black car stopped beyond the gate.

The rear door opened.

Jonathan Vale stepped out.

He wore the same watch shown in the clinic photograph.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then Margaret’s phone rang.

She answered without speaking.

Jonathan’s voice came through the line.

“Maggie, do not open the gate.”

Margaret watched him standing outside.

“Why?”

“Because the man you see on the camera is not me.”

Behind Margaret, Noah quietly removed a second Aster keycard from inside his jacket.

Olivia saw it first.

“Noah?”

He turned toward her.

The farmhouse lights went out.

The final thing Margaret heard before the call disconnected was Jonathan’s warning.

“The founder has been inside your house the entire time.”
