THE ORDER SHE NEVER GAVE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - jonathan’s voice

Margaret held the recorder as if it were something alive.

Seventeen years had passed since she had last heard Jonathan’s voice outside her memories.

The recorder required a six-digit code.

Olivia tried her birthday.

Incorrect.

Margaret tried their wedding date.

Incorrect.

Noah entered through the service passage with Colonel Beck behind him.

“Ethan and Diane escaped through the east stairwell,” Beck reported. “The gate cameras were disabled.”

“Search every vehicle,” Margaret said.

The investigator pointed toward the recorder.

“Is that Northbridge evidence?”

“It belonged to my husband.”

Noah examined the keypad.

“Jonathan never used meaningful dates for secure devices.”

“What did he use?” Olivia asked.

“Coordinates.”

Margaret remembered the compass symbol on Jonathan’s letters.

She entered the coordinates of the place where he had proposed to her.

The device unlocked.

A small screen displayed twelve recordings.

The first was dated three days before his death.

Margaret pressed play.

Jonathan’s voice filled the room.

“Maggie, if you’re hearing this, Northbridge has reached our family.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Olivia took her hand.

Jonathan continued.

“The route order carries your authorization, but you did not issue it. I confirmed your credentials were copied during the Geneva summit. Someone inside command wanted my team diverted.”

Margaret opened her eyes.

For seventeen years, she had lived with guilt.

One sentence had lifted it.

But the next sentence replaced guilt with anger.

“Diane Cross arranged the civilian transport contracts. She is not the architect. She is a gatekeeper.”

Noah looked toward Margaret.

The recording continued.

“The real network calls itself Aster. It operates through officers, contractors, judges, physicians, and elected officials. They do not share loyalty. They share secrets.”

Olivia looked toward Doctor Rowe’s abandoned medical case.

Jonathan’s voice became quieter.

“I transferred the continuation list to a genetic trust. The archive will unlock when Olivia’s child is legally registered. I hated involving our daughter, but every normal storage system was compromised.”

Olivia pressed a hand against her stomach.

Jonathan paused on the recording.

“If Olivia is pregnant when this begins, Aster will try to control the child. Do not let them obtain guardianship.”

Margaret felt Olivia’s grip tighten.

A sound came from the recorder.

Another person was present with Jonathan.

The voice was too faint to identify.

Jonathan spoke again.

“There is one more thing. Someone close to Maggie is helping them. I cannot record the name. If the wrong person finds this device, the warning may be the only advantage she has.”

The recording ended.

Colonel Beck folded his arms.

“Someone close to you?”

Margaret looked around the room.

Beck had served beside her for twelve years.

Noah had been Jonathan’s friend.

The military investigators had arrived through channels someone had tried to block.

Any of them could be compromised.

Olivia selected the second recording.

A password request appeared.

CLUE: THE NAME OUR DAUGHTER GAVE THE STARS.

Olivia frowned.

“I used to name stars?”

Margaret remembered nights on the old farmhouse roof. Jonathan would point toward the sky while Olivia invented names for constellations.

One name returned to her.

“The Guardian.”

Olivia entered it.

The file opened.

Instead of Jonathan’s voice, Diane appeared on the tiny video screen.

She looked younger.

She was seated across from a man whose face remained outside the frame.

“We can control Ethan,” Diane said. “But Margaret will never surrender the archive.”

The unseen man answered.

“She will when Olivia believes her mother killed Jonathan.”

Margaret leaned closer.

The voice was not distorted in this recording.

She recognized it.

So did Olivia.

Colonel Beck took one step backward.

The man on the recording was Deputy Defense Secretary Adrian Cole, Margaret’s former commanding officer.

The same official who had blocked the investigation.
