Chapter 9 - florence declares war)

Peter refused to meet Florence alone.
She sat in the boardroom with her attorney and placed the folder on the table.
“I represent Redwood Bridge Partners.”
Peter stared at her.
“No, you don’t.”
“My brother has assigned me authority.”
“Your connection was never disclosed.”
“That is irrelevant.”
“It is extremely relevant.”
Florence smiled.
“NexoCloud is in default.”
“The cure period has not expired.”
“Under the personal guarantee, certain defaults trigger immediate enforcement.”
Peter’s attorney took the document.
His expression changed as he read.
Florence leaned back.
“I want Jonathan’s shares transferred.”
Peter stared at her.
“You’re trying to take your son’s company.”
“I’m protecting family assets.”
“You helped drain the company.”
“Prove it.”
Peter’s jaw tightened.
Florence had spent decades mastering one skill.
She knew where everyone’s guilt began and ended.
Jonathan felt guilty enough to surrender.
Walter felt guilty enough to remain silent.
Mason felt greedy enough to cooperate.
Florence had always believed loyalty meant everyone accepting her definition of what the family needed.
She had not calculated for outsiders.
Especially Charlotte.
At eleven, NexoCloud’s board filed an emergency action challenging Redwood’s enforcement rights based on undisclosed conflicts and possible fraudulent conduct.
At noon, Florence gave an interview.
She said Charlotte Davis had manipulated her son.
She said Vanguard planned to seize NexoCloud at a discount.
She said the divorce was a business strategy.
By afternoon, the story was everywhere.
Charlotte watched a television analyst speculate about whether she had married Jonathan to gain inside information.
Nora stood beside the screen.
“We have to answer.”
Charlotte remained silent.
“They’re defining you.”
“Facts define me.”
“Not on television.”
Charlotte turned.
“What do you recommend?”
“Release the timeline showing your recusal.”
“We already did.”
“Release the prenup.”
Charlotte frowned.
Nora continued.
“The original prenup.”
Charlotte understood.
Her legitimate agreement contained something powerful.
Charlotte had waived any claim to Jonathan’s NexoCloud shares.
She had also waived spousal support.
At the time, Gerald Pike had seemed delighted that the supposedly poor bride signed so easily.
Jonathan’s family believed they were protecting his fortune from her.
Now the document proved she had never sought his company.
Miriam approved.
By five, Vanguard publicly released a redacted chronology prepared by independent counsel.
Charlotte had begun dating Jonathan months before NexoCloud appeared on Vanguard’s investment watch list.
She disclosed the relationship immediately after Vanguard initiated serious review.
She had participated in no negotiations.
Her valid prenuptial agreement waived any marital claim to NexoCloud equity.
The narrative changed within hours.
Reporters began asking a different question.
If Charlotte wanted Jonathan’s company, why had she legally surrendered any right to it before marriage?
Then Miriam delivered the second blow.
The forged prenuptial page failed preliminary forensic testing.
Different printer.
Different toner.
Different paper batch.
Charlotte’s signature had likely been digitally reproduced.
Gerald Pike stopped answering reporters.
Jonathan issued a statement through his own attorney.
He denied authorizing the altered page.
More importantly, he publicly confirmed that Charlotte had never sought control of NexoCloud.
Florence called him immediately.
Jonathan answered.
“You betrayed your family.”
Jonathan stood inside his temporary apartment.
“No.”
“You defended her.”
“I told the truth.”
“She is destroying us.”
“No, Mom.”
Florence went silent.
Jonathan looked out the window.
“You are.”
“You ungrateful little…”
“I spent my whole life being afraid you would stop loving me if I said no.”
Florence laughed.
“You sound pathetic.”
“Maybe.”
Jonathan’s voice shook.
“But I finally understand something.”
“What?”
“You call obedience love because then nobody can leave you.”
Florence hung up.
Jonathan stood alone.
The words had taken thirty-six years to say.
They changed nothing about Charlotte.
But they changed him.
That night, Walter left Florence.
He packed two suitcases and moved into a hotel.
For the first time in their marriage, he gave investigators access to his personal records without consulting her.
Those records revealed a transfer.
Three hundred forty thousand dollars from Miller Strategic Services to Gerald Pike.
Paid eleven days before the wedding.
Description:
Estate planning services.
Miriam stared at the bank statement.
Charlotte sat across from her.
“You think he created the fake prenup page?”
“I think we’re going to ask.”
Gerald Pike answered the question himself the next morning.
He requested a private meeting with prosecutors.
By lunchtime, Florence no longer had just a corporate scandal.
She had a potential fraud investigation.
But the greatest shock came that afternoon when the Vanguard investment committee voted.
Six to zero.
They would rescue NexoCloud.
May you like
Under one condition.
Jonathan Miller could never again control the company.
