THE NURSE WHO NEVER FLINCHED / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Hospital Director’s Secret

Margaret Lane had always appeared harmless.

She sent handwritten birthday cards to employees. She remembered the names of their children. She visited patients during holidays and donated half her salary to public health foundations.

Now she stood beneath the helicopter lights with armed soldiers behind her.

“Give me the drive,” Lane said.

Emily tightened her grip around it.

“You work for Meridian.”

“I work for continuity.”

Caldwell’s word.

Daniel positioned himself slightly in front of Sophie.

“Whose authority are you operating under?”

Lane looked at him.

“You still believe authority comes from uniforms.”

Ruiz showed his badge.

“This property is under a state criminal investigation.”

“Your investigation ended when the facility collapsed.”

“There are witnesses.”

Lane glanced at the children.

“No. There are patients requiring protective custody.”

Vale struggled to stand.

“You ordered their termination.”

Lane’s expression remained pleasant.

“And yet you kept them alive. Your sentimentality has become inconvenient, Helena.”

Emily studied the soldiers.

Their weapons were raised but their fingers remained outside the triggers.

Lane wanted the drive intact.

That meant she could not risk killing Emily immediately.

“Who redirected the transfer?” Emily asked.

Lane smiled.

“You already know.”

Emily looked at the group.

One of them had betrayed the others.

Daniel shook his head slightly.

Micah’s face was unreadable.

Aaron avoided her eyes.

Vale leaned against the wall.

Ruiz watched Lane’s soldiers.

Lane held out her hand.

“The drive.”

Emily raised it.

Then she threw it into the lake.

Several soldiers moved.

Lane did not.

“You would not destroy the only copy.”

“It’s waterproof,” Emily said. “But you don’t know where it landed.”

Lane sighed.

“You have your father’s instinct for unnecessary drama.”

A gunshot came from the trees.

One helicopter light shattered.

Darkness covered half the shoreline.

Ruiz shouted, “Move!”

Daniel pulled Sophie and two children behind the boat house. Micah attacked the nearest soldier. Aaron drove his shoulder into another.

Emily ran toward the lake.

Lane grabbed her hair.

Emily turned and struck her twice. Lane blocked the third blow with unexpected speed.

“You think I hired you to watch you,” Lane said as they fought. “I hired you to shape you.”

Emily drove her elbow into Lane’s ribs.

“What does that mean?”

“Every crisis. Every difficult patient. Every violent encounter. We were maintaining your response conditioning.”

“You controlled the hospital.”

“We controlled your environment.”

Lane drew a knife.

Emily caught her wrist.

The blade stopped inches from her throat.

“You were never free,” Lane whispered.

Emily twisted the knife away and struck Lane across the jaw.

Lane fell.

Daniel fired a flare over the lake.

The red light revealed a diver surfacing near the dock.

The diver held the drive.

Aaron ran toward him.

The diver removed his mask.

Detective Ruiz stared.

The man was his police captain.

Captain Nolan fired at Aaron.

Aaron spun and fell into the water.

Ruiz shot Nolan in the shoulder.

The drive landed on the dock.

Emily reached it first.

Lane shouted, “Take her alive!”

More soldiers entered the boat house.

Micah opened a fuel valve from an old marine generator.

Gasoline spread across the floor.

Daniel understood immediately.

He grabbed the children and led them toward the rear exit.

Micah ignited a road flare.

Lane stopped.

“You would burn them?”

“No,” Micah said. “I’d burn your path.”

He dropped the flare.

Fire raced across the floor.

A wall of flame divided the boat house.

Emily, Daniel, Micah, Sophie, Ruiz, Vale, and the children escaped through the rear while Lane’s forces retreated toward the shore.

Aaron was missing.

Emily looked back at the lake.

A trail of blood floated near the dock.

“He’s gone,” Ruiz said.

“No,” Emily replied. “Not until we find him.”

Daniel pointed toward a maintenance truck beyond the trees.

They loaded the children into the rear compartment and drove through an old forest road before Lane’s vehicles could surround them.

For twenty minutes, no one spoke.

Sophie sat beside Emily.

“Was the man in the water our friend?”

Emily looked through the rear window.

“I don’t know.”

“Are any of them our friends?”

Emily had no answer.

The drive in her pocket vibrated.

A hidden light blinked.

She connected it to Daniel’s field computer.

One file had opened automatically.

TRAITOR CONFIRMATION.

A video appeared.

It showed the server room during the transfer.

The hidden camera angle clearly captured someone entering the redirection command.

Emily watched the recording twice.

Then she closed the screen before anyone else could see it.

The person who had stolen the Meridian directory was sitting inside the truck with them.
