THE NURSE WHO NEVER FLINCHED / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Traitor in the Tunnel

Adrian stared at the screen.

“That is impossible.”

The external transfer had been redirected one second before completion.

The evidence had not reached the news organizations or oversight agencies.

It had gone to an unknown server.

Someone inside their group had changed the destination.

Emily turned slowly.

Daniel stood near the north server column.

Micah shielded Sophie behind him.

Aaron remained on the upper walkway.

Vale lay bleeding beside the chair.

Ruiz was still outside the facility.

Any one of them could have altered the transfer.

A warning flashed across the console.

FACILITY PURGE IN FIVE MINUTES.

Caldwell’s final order.

The servers began overheating.

“We need to move,” Daniel said.

Adrian removed a compact drive from the console.

“I captured part of the directory locally.”

“How much?” Emily asked.

“Eleven percent.”

“Ward Twelve?”

“Yes.”

“Then we take it.”

Micah opened a service map.

“There’s an evacuation tunnel leading to the western shoreline.”

They moved through the lower corridor as the facility trembled.

Emily and Daniel carried Adrian between them. Micah kept Sophie close. Aaron supported Vale despite her protests.

Behind the reinforced room doors, twenty-two other children waited.

“We can’t leave them,” Emily said.

“The tunnel won’t hold everyone,” Micah replied.

“Then we make it hold.”

Emily used Vale’s master badge to release the rooms.

The children emerged silently.

No one asked questions.

They had been trained to obey alarms.

Sophie took the hand of the smallest child, a girl no older than four.

“This way,” she said.

They entered the evacuation tunnel with less than three minutes remaining.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

The first explosion hit behind them.

Lights failed one section at a time.

Ruiz’s voice came over the radio.

“The house collapsed. Lake water is flooding the lower levels.”

Daniel looked back.

“How far to the exit?”

“Half a mile.”

They ran.

Adrian became weaker with every step.

Emily tried to slow down for him.

He pushed her away.

“Take Sophie.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“You already lost sixteen years.”

“I will not lose you again.”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“You never had me.”

The words hurt because they were true.

A steel door began closing ahead.

Micah sprinted forward and wedged his body against it.

Daniel joined him.

Together they held it open while the children passed beneath.

Aaron carried Vale through last.

Adrian collapsed before reaching the doorway.

Emily went back.

Water surged through the tunnel behind them.

Adrian pressed the local drive into her hand.

“Elise, listen to me.”

“No.”

“The file contains a list of every second-generation subject.”

“We’ll read it together.”

“It also contains your original intake report.”

Emily pulled him upward.

“Stop talking.”

“The report says you arrived at Ward Twelve with another child.”

Emily froze.

“What child?”

“Your sister.”

The water struck them.

Daniel grabbed Emily’s arm and pulled her through the doorway.

Micah released the mechanism.

The steel door slammed shut.

Adrian remained on the other side.

Emily screamed and fought to reopen it.

Her father stood behind the small reinforced window as water rose around his waist.

He placed one hand against the glass.

Emily placed hers over it.

“I’m sorry,” he mouthed.

Then the tunnel behind him collapsed.

The window went dark.

Daniel pulled Emily away as the remaining corridor began to flood.

They continued toward the shore.

The tunnel exit opened beneath an abandoned boat house.

Police lights flashed through the trees.

Ruiz ran toward them.

“You made it.”

Emily counted the children.

Twenty-three, including Sophie.

Micah stepped outside last.

Aaron followed with Vale.

Daniel searched the shoreline.

“There should be medical teams.”

Ruiz looked toward the road.

“They were ordered back.”

“By whom?”

“Federal command.”

Black helicopters approached over the lake.

Armored vehicles blocked both roads leading from the property.

Ruiz raised his hands.

“That is not my team.”

Soldiers in unmarked uniforms surrounded the boat house.

A woman stepped from the lead vehicle.

She wore a dark federal jacket and carried no visible weapon.

Emily recognized her.

Hospital Director Margaret Lane.

The woman who had hired Emily nine years earlier.

The woman who had approved every promotion, every schedule change, and every transfer request.

May you like

Director Lane smiled.

“Thank you for gathering the children in one place.”
